  • Amplify and Read

    Funded May 5, 2021

Thank you so much for contributing to our Donors Choose Project Amplify and Read. Both at the end of last school year and this year, the wireless voice amplifier and bluetooth speaker have been a life saver for me. These valuable tools have allowed me to talk at a normal volume without straining to talk loudly through the mask and let everyone in my classroom hear me loud and clear.

The wonderful books you helped provide have allowed a lot of enjoyment for read alouds and for the kids to explore on their own. "Dragons Love Tacos" is a new favorite of mine. After all, who doesn't love tacos? We celebrated annual "Dot Day" last month by reading "The Dot", decorating a dot, and writing about how we can each be brave and unique. Thank you for helping to make this project and many more possible for teachers and students!”

  • Diverse Books for Everyone!

    Funded Dec 8, 2020

My students have loved having books read to them in our daily lessons on Zoom. We've explored many topics that introduce diversity in a fun yet meaningful way. We discovered where some people get their names in "My Name is Yoon" and "Alma and How She Got Her Name." The class then asked their parents for their name stories and recorded themselves telling where their names came from. We had fun watching these videos and learning more about each other.

We also explored diversity and inclusion in "All Are Welcome", "The Day You Begin", and "We Are All Wonders." These books opened up topics to social-emotional learning and including others as well as liking ourselves for who we are.

Thank you so much for helping to provide the many diversity rich books in this project. As we get ready to return to in person class, we will continue to use these books for read aloud materials as well as having the books in the classroom library so the students can read them over and over. I look forward to reading these year after year with my future classes as well. Books truly are the gift that keeps on giving.”

  • Air Purifier for Terrific 3rd Graders

    Funded Aug 29, 2020

Thank you so much for your generous donation through Donors Choose for our Air Purifier and replacement filters. Sadly, we have not yet returned in person but when we do, I know this will benefit our class greatly. Being in an older portable classroom, the sealing around the doors and windows lets in a lot of dust. This will help kids with allergies and asthma. Also, as a teacher with immunodeficiency and allergies, I truly appreciate the peace of mind, the air purifier will bring to me. I know the parents of my students and the students also are grateful for this project being funded. Again, thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”

  • Green Screen to Adventure!

    Funded Sep 30, 2020

Thank you so much for your generous donation towards a green screen for our class. As a teacher doing distance learning, having it be portable and collapsible has allowed me to change teaching locations as needed. The green screen has allowed me to have fun and educational virtual backgrounds. You can see our hat day and Star Wars day photos in the picture using the green screen. I also included a fun photo from when the Dodgers were in the World Series. We will be able to use the green screen in the future when we begin in person classes someday as well. Again, thank you!”

  • We Need More Room for Books We Love!

    Funded Dec 4, 2019

Thank you so much for contributing to our spinning bookcase and the labels to alphabetize the books! We were able to build the shelf and get it set up just before the schools shut down in March.

The bookcase offers a lot of shelf space to hold chapter books but doesn't take up a lot of room. The students loved browsing the shelves for books they hadn't noticed or read before. The labels for alphabetizing allow students to quickly find books by their favorite authors.

I was able to include some pictures from when our class was together and class from the virtual setting including Star Wars day. Thank you again for helping our class get the spinning bookcase. I'm sure I'll be using it for years to come with many classes.”

  • Help With Economic Responsibility

    Funded Oct 25, 2019

My students were very excited when I pulled the cash register and "wallets" out of the box. Each student decorated their wallet with Sharpies where they will store money they earn in class. They get "paid" for positive behavior, turning in homework on time, table group work, and much more. They have to "pay" rent for using their desk and chair.

They can also buy fun items from our classroom treasure box. Items cost varying amounts so they can spend their money in small amounts or save for higher priced items. This allows students to learn how to save money and exercise self-restraint.

The students are also getting the experience of giving change. They need to trade one, five, ten, and twenty dollar bills just like in real life. Their counting skills and understanding of money has improved. Thank you so much for contributing to buy our wallets, fake money, and cash register.”

  • "Laminator"- Now Say That like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator!

    Funded Sep 28, 2019

Thank you so much for your generous donation that helped our class get a laminator and laminating film. We have already used the laminator several times. We decorated large dots for International Dot Day to celebrate a book called "The Dot Book" by Peter H. Reynolds that encourages all kids to be an artist and a creative thinker. We used oil pastels, markers, crayons, and color pencils then laminated them and hung them outside of our classroom on the window grates along with the rest of the 3rd grade.

We also drew and decorated pumpkins that we laminated and hung outside using a method called Zentangle. Again, the students were able to be creative and show off their work outside where much of the school could see the art since it was laminated. Another thing we laminated was space ships we drew with our names on them. We are using them to move along the planets as we pass our multiplication and division tests.

Again, thank you so much for donating to our classroom laminator that can be used over and over for years to come.”

  • Classroom in Need of Sprucing Up

    Funded Aug 22, 2019

My students were extremely excited when the boxes of supplies arrived in the classroom. Over the next few days as I assembled our new mailbox cubbies I could see the smiles on their faces. We use our new mailboxes on a daily basis! It is so nice to have such an important classroom tool that's new and not falling apart.

We also received a Scholastic News Magazine subscription. They devour the magazines when they are handed out. learning about science, history, and current events. They are reading and learning comprehension skills while having fun. Luckily, these magazines will continue to arrive throughout the school year.

Thank you for providing such great resources for our 3rd grade class!”

  • Young Artists in Training: Materials Needed

    Funded Apr 27, 2012

Thank you so much for contributing to our classroom art supplies. We have been able to expand our art vocabulary with terms like horizon line, background, and foreground. The students loved drawing imaginary creatures using the construction paper crayons and black markers. They also have been able to use the color pencils and black marker to draw Chinese junks using the Monart style.

Next we will be drawing and painting a room. The little details will be done in watercolor pencils. These art supplies are items the school would never be able to purchase so we are opening a whole new experience to children who would not be able to afford expensive art classes.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hyer

  • New Classroom Carpet

    Funded Jan 28, 2012

We have been using and enjoying our rug on a daily basis. It has become a vital resource for students to sit on during instructional lessons. It is directly at the front of the room by the white board so we can demonstrate long division or writing lessons. It is also a place for small groups to meet during their independent work time activities. Although classroom carpets are important to primary grade teachers they are not items that the school can afford to provide especially with the recent economic cutbacks. Thank you so much for contributing to our classroom carpet!”

Our school is located in southern California. Many of our students come from low income homes. They love to hear stories read to them even though they are in third grade. We are a Math, Science, and Technology Magnet. We attend Science lab weekly and Computer lab every other week. My students have high aspirations to become the first in their family to graduate from college.
