  • Inquiry Based Science to Promote STEM Skills & Leaders

    Funded Dec 26, 2021

Thank you so much for your generosity to our science programs. We were able to start many great conversations about science and our society. With your support we were able to study various soil types in our environment and compare the makeup of successful growing soil and find reasons why our soil is so varied in the NYC area. We also used our tools to study the ideas of bioaccumulation and we will use these findings to deepen our studies on how chemical impact a wider variety of indicator species. We also used our chemical tests to see the impacts of various air pollutants on soils and breathing rates in nature.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Nicole Bonanno

  • Bringing AP Biology Lab to Future Scientists

    Funded Feb 24, 2019

Thank you for your donations to our classroom. My students and I greatly appreciated it. The technology of stereoscopes was a great addition to the classroom and the students were able to see how different microscopes are able to aid the scientific process. This a new technology that the students are able to experience changing the process of science. This technology has allowed all students to see the ways we can breed fruit flies and see how the breeding process can be impacted in various lab settings. Being able to control and setup breeding patterns allowed the students to see the different kinds of work geneticists and behavior scientists spend their time doing. There were some who even felt that this kind of work was legally and ethically unjust so they spent time coming up with various alternatives to breeding experiments in the science classroom for future classroom settings. The most exciting part of the experiment was putting the flies to "sleep" so they could be moved from one breeding environment to another. The students felt they were in their words "real scientists" and were changing the lives of others.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Nicole Bonanno

The Genetics Kit and Stereomicroscope will allow students to take part in two hands-on laboratory experiments to get full exposure to designing and conducting hands-on science. Students will be able to conduct, carry out, and analyze experiments they have set up and present the information to their peers. They will use the information they have learned to synthesize the concepts of biology and learn as lab scientists do on a daily basis as they make breaking science discoveries. Students will be able to manipulate scientific variables and apply science concepts they have learned about in relation to genetics and circulation of organisms. Students will be able to study the likelihood of inheriting certain traits in genetic monohybrid and dihybrid crosses using Fruit flies. Students will mate the fruit flies and study the physical traits that the offspring have developed from mating. The students will have the ability to cross fruit flies and study the likelihood of developing traits including wing shape and eye color of the flies. They will get to see how traits are passed from parents to offspring and the linked traits in new generation of fruit flies.
