This is a self-contained special education class for fifteen students with moderate mental disabilities in grades 6-8. Many students have Autism, Down Syndrome or various other disabilities. Some students have impaired speech or motor skills. Others have behavioral issues which only allow them to sit and work for very short periods of time. In this classroom we work mainly on functional academics and daily living skills. The ultimate goal is for each student to become as independent as possible in their daily lives. This school and its staff and students are truly accepting of all my student's differences. We have an excellent peer tutoring program in place which allows for my students to make friends with peers outside of their classroom. Students love to see their friends at lunch and speak to them in the hallways and related arts classes. It is amazing to see all of the kids in this middle school interact and become friends with this special group of students.
