What’s the News?
Funded Aug 12, 2023This project has brought current events into our classroom. My students truly enjoy the Scholastic News and the Storyworks Magazine.
Scholastic News has helped my students learn through nonfiction. They love reading about topics that they have heard their family talk about or seen on the news. It has also helped me teach them the value of text features and how to use them to enhance their understanding of the text.
Storyworks Magazine has also been an amazing addition to our reading time. Students beg to read the Reader's Theater, and I love that it includes different genres and lots of activities for learning.”

Funded Nov 5, 2022Thank you so much for your generous donation. My students love the new resources that we were able to get. They are used during literacy centers each week!
We use all of the resources during our literacy center time. I am able to differentiate instruction based on student need and keep them engaged with all of these supplies.
They were very excited when we opened all of the boxes. We spent part of that first afternoon exploring all of the items! Their favorite is the quick cards. They make it a game and see who can collect the most correct answers. They also enjoy the fluency cards each week. They love timing themselves to see how much farther they are able to read after that first read!
As a teacher, it is wonderful to see my students enthusiastic about their education, and these reading materials are helping increase that enthusiasm and get them pumped for literacy!”

This classroom project was brought to life by Oklahoma State Department of Education.Social Studies and Science and Reading! Oh My!
Funded Oct 23, 2017We were so excited to receive the books! We have used the books to do an in depth study of non-fiction text features. Many of my students did not understand how using the text features could help them better understand a topic. After an overview of the features, they were able to work in small groups to identify things such as the table of contents, the glossary, and diagrams. They were able to explain how the different features helped them have a better understanding of the topic. This has already helped several students understand other non-fiction books in our classroom including social studies and science.
They were also able to use the biography books to research a famous person from history. They absolutely loved this! They created a report about the individual and a large almost life sized poster board of the person. They loved sharing what they learned with their classmates, and many were encouraged to read more biographies due to the presentations of their peers.
Reading in our classroom is a magical time. Students spread out and find comfy spots in a bean bag, camping chair, loveseat, or just sprawled out on the floor. They become so caught up in the stories and facts that they are reading that they do not want to stop. With the additions of the new non-fiction books, most of my reluctant readers have become readers. They love diving into these books that have engrossing facts and funny jokes. You're donations have helped some of my most unwilling readers to become readers and truly enjoy reading. Thank you so much!”
