Funded Oct 13, 2015How can I describe taking my students from a classroom on Earth to learning about Space and beyond? Because of your donation, my students were able to use the laptop, the monitor and headsets to communicate with each other using a simulated Space program from the Kennedy Space Center. But first, they had to learn about "going into Space" and all that it entails. Using the new laptop, students researched Mars, and the important items they would need for a successful voyage. Using the technology purchased, they worked as teams and collaborated on how to make "Martian fuel". Once this was completed, they came up with a plan, but they were not ready to "Go for Launch". The next step was actually going to the Kennedy Space Center and learning how Astronauts train and the future of Space.
Imagine their excitement once they arrived at the Kennedy Space Center. Now they came face to face with the Space Shuttle and learned about missions taken. Seeing the importance of technology first hand and how it is used for communication, especially when astronauts are millions of miles away, made what seemed "simple" to them in the classroom, more vital and relevant to Space travel. It may seem that head-sets, a laptop and a monitor (to see the bigger picture) are insignificant compared to everything used at the Space center, but your donation has taken them further than you could ever imagine.
Now they not only are excited about space and learning about Mars, but they have learned to work as a team. In those teams, they are given the responsibility of being the Commander, the Pilot and the Mission Specialists. They have learned to solve problems and work together in solving those problems. They feel a sense of pride in the accomplishment of a "take off" well done and executed. You might think "all because of three simple items", but the truth is, these items have changed their attitudes toward Science and STEM in my classroom. They love to hear "Go for Launch", and I love to hear "someday, I'm going to be an Astronaut", all because of your generosity. Thank you from the bottom of my heart...you have made this teacher take her student's learning "above and beyond".”
With gratitude,
Ms. Gomez
