Historical Fiction
Funded Feb 18, 2013Thank you so much for your generous contributions! I am very excited about how quickly this project got funded. Due to your kindness, we will soon be able to use these books to improve our literacy and knowledge of important American history.
I intend on having students practice reading aloud using these books and then engaging in deep whole-group conversations. With these novels, we will develop our fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. I look forward to sharing this exciting news with my students!
Thank you again!”

2020 Scholars Learn Science through Reading
Funded Dec 28, 2011Thank you so much for your incredible generosity! My students are now experiencing science and literacy in a whole new way. Your donation made possible the purchase of leveled science readers, a strategy book for teaching science as a tool for reading comprehension, and colored paper.
During centers, my students rotate and one of the staple centers is science reading. They choose whatever card they want on various topics to read and answer questions. The vivid colors and accessible text keeps them completely engaged. The students are honing their skills at using text to answer questions, while gaining valuable science knowledge.
When we work together on whole class reading, I will model a skill and quickly be able to send students to practice on their own. Students know which color paper to use and can begin work on an appropriate level. Their understanding of key concepts like main idea, inferences, and summarizing have absolutely improved as a result of leveled non-fiction texts. My students reading below grade level have the opportunity to feel successful, all while developing important skills.
Additionally, I have used these tools as a valuable resource to send home. I create individualized home challenge packets for my students weekly. They work over the week on the packets and then they turn them in on Thursdays. I grade and return the packets quickly because the following Monday corrections are due. My students are excited for this process of growing through home challenges. The science reading passages are an important component. At home they practice identifying topic sentences, answering questions in full sentences, and decoding vocabulary.
Thank you again for your kindness! I look forward to using these resources more over the next few years. I will continue to innovate and find other more effective ways to use them to their full potential! Thank you again! ”
