BSSHS is an alternative high school in Washington DC. A majority of our students come to us with reading levels significantly below grade level. Of these students ages 16-24, one third are parents or care givers to at least one child. The purpose of the Next Generation Reading Program is to provide children’s books, along with family in person and virtual literacy events including a baby book circle led by our Early Childhood Ed teacher. This year we have started a Pre K- 3 book club. We already have 5 little readers who have earned prizes. Our ultimate goal is for our students to appreciate the importance of reading to their children and for the children to see how fun reading can be. By creating a next generation of readers, we are working to close the literacy gap- one family at a time.
