I have one specific kiddo who has had a rough start in life. This young adult was born with Cerebral Palsy. Her family was told she would most likely never walk, talk, or basically be successful. However, this amazing child wouldn't let that hold her back- she walks without assistance, is a great conversationalist, she's an incredibly hard worker, she's a Girl Scout, and she even performs in local community theater!
However, because of her diagnosis, in order to be successful she does have to work harder than her typical peers.
Due to her disability, her writing tends to be very slow paced and very large. She is given teacher notes/peer notes and often has a scribe available to her. However, she would like to gain more independence in the classroom, as would her family. When she practices taking notes independently in class, she works so hard, but often is physically unable to keep up with note taking and listening simultaneously. Often times she requires re-teaching, so she is able to put audible words to her notes. She also requires the repetition in order to be successful. Due to this need- her family and I have discussed how a Livescribe set (pen/notebooks) could truly help change her education for the better! A Livescribe would allow her to begin to take her own notes and record the lesson being taught at that moment in time. This way she is able to refer to her notes independently and listen to the lesson being taught again, as many times as she needs! This would be ideal to have her learn this strategy now in order to help her be even more successful when she goes onto college!
