First grade is the essential year where students need the most practice. It's also the year where they are the busiest of little bodies. Each day for at least 45 minutes, my students are rotating in stations. We call this the Daily 5. Daily 5 provides opportunities for all students to develop their skills as independent readers. The stations include Word Work, Read to Self, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Read to Someone. Literacy stations reinforce the skills taught during whole group and with the proper tools and resources, students can successfully work on differentiated tasks while I am able to pull small groups for interventions. The headphones are needed during Listen to Reading while my honeybees log onto literacy programs that are differentiated to their levels. All the creative tools like alphabet stamps, ink pads, magnetic letters and wikki stix are used during Word Work. This is where students practice their high frequency words and spelling patterns. They may also use a dictionary during this time. Expo markers and clear pocket sleeves are used during Word Work and Work on Writing where students practice their handwriting skills. I often include literacy games similar to Connect 4 where they use counters. Primary Journals are by far the best resource and most expensive. These journals however are very purposeful. Some students are strong writers while others are still dependent on picture cues. Therefore, the journals really allow me to differentiate writing activities which boosts their confidence. In all, with the proper tools, my honeybees can get straight to work. The variety prevents boredom and ensures they stay engaged. They simply have fun while learning!
