There There by Tommy Orange is an incredible book. It's about being a part of two different cultures, Native American and white cultures, about belonging and not belonging, and about the hard realities that these characters face. Our students crave books which speak to them and their experiences. All of my students are English Language Learners. They, too, belong to different cultures and are constantly navigating the space in between belonging and not belonging. 50% of my students are dual-identified as being both ELLs and Sped students. One of the characters in this book has Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. He calls it the Drome and sees the way his disability gives him special powers. My students need characters who are not defined by their limitations, but how they see themselves and what has happened to them. I will teach this book as a part of a unit on Native American literature. When I am done teaching this unit, this class set of books will be available to other teachers in the building.
