More Xylophones for Music Class
Funded Aug 19, 2024Thank you for your support of music education! My students were very excited to receive more xylophones, and they really appreciate the extra playing time that comes with extra instruments. We have already put the new instruments to good use, playing melodies and bass lines to accompany singing. We have practiced some improvising using the pentatonic scale. My 4th graders took some of these improvised patterns and created original compositions. The same 4th graders also recently performed a song from West Africa called "Funga Alafia" using drums and xylophones.
I like to ask my students at the end of the year what some of their favorite things about music class were. Overwhelmingly, playing instruments is always top of the list. Your donation has helped to make that possible, and we are all very grateful!”

Funded Apr 2, 2024Last year was my first year at a new school, and I had a vision of how I wanted to set up my music classes. I had enough materials to get started, but I needed more instruments to reach the full potential of my students. This project gave us an additional soprano xylophone to add to our growing melodic instrument collection. It also filled an specific need in that it provided a special bass bar, a single large bass note to fill out the harmony. Students love the sound of the bass bar and are very eager to have a turn playing it every time we use it. It really helps them understand the role of bass instruments in music, because it gives them hands-on experience playing it and hearing the difference it makes. Now we just need to get more notes so we can play more than one note bass lines!
Thank you again for your support of our music program!”

Funded Feb 28, 2024Last year was my first year at a new school, and I had a vision of how I wanted to set up my music classes. I had enough materials to get started, but I needed more instruments to reach the full potential of my students. Getting this project funded was a big boost because I immediately put all 7 instruments to use almost every day in every class. Some of the first lessons with the new instruments were 3rd graders learning the melody to a song from Zimbabwe and kindergarteners exploring high and low sounds. All grades got to use them many times last year, and they are still getting almost daily playing time this year.
Thank you again for your support of our music program!”

Instrument Tune-up
Funded Sep 20, 2022It was a great surprise to check my email at the end of a long day of teaching to find my project has been funded! Thank you for your support of my great strings students. We’re off to a strong start this year, and these new materials will help keep the instruments in great playing shape.”

Funded Aug 17, 2021I am so grateful for your support of my classroom and students so that we could purchase a microphone and laptop to use for recording in class. The microphone is much better quality that something like a phone could provide, and the computer has made it easy to edit, store, and organize recordings over time.
At first, my students, like most middle school students, did not want to be recorded. Their first thought is always "we're going to sound so bad!" One of the great results of being able to easily make high quality recordings at any time in class is that they have been able to hear their progression over time. It has built up their confidence and they have learned that their hard work pays off because they can hear it.”

Funded Dec 31, 2015Thank you all for your generous support of my classroom and students. As we approach 2016, there is so much to be excited about. At our school we have several new arts classrooms being built, including a music room for me and my students. These rooms will be done in the next few weeks. I can't think of a better way to celebrate my new classroom than with some new musical equipment for my students!
Thanks again from me and the nearly 200 students I teach every day!”

Listen to Those Drummers Marching Down the Street!
Funded Dec 19, 2014Thank you for your support of our music program. This was an exciting year in which we grew to offer several new musical options for students in the upper grades. Among the new options were band and percussion classes. I was excited to take leadership of the percussion class because of my great experiences as a percussionist in middle school. We started small, with only a few snare drums to share. With the funding of this project, I suddenly had at least one drum for every two students.
My students were thrilled to see the new drums, and they appreciated the extra playing time the drums gave them. Thank you for putting more instruments in to the hands of children!”

We Want to Hear the Music
Funded Oct 21, 2014Thanks you for helping to provide us with great new headphones for our school keyboards. My students were excited as ever as we got started with keyboard lessons in the fall. But after the initial excitement wore off, they started to notice ill-fitting and broken headphones. I developed a quick answer to any headphone complaints--"I know it's broken, but don't worry because new headphones will be here before you know it!" The promise of new headphones got my students through the discomfort and annoyance of broken headphones. The complaints had virtually stopped when the box of brand-new headphones arrived. So here we are now, happily playing keyboard with comfortable new headphones and a school full of kids who learned a valuable lesson in patience.”

Funded Oct 25, 2013I want to send you a big thank you from my littlest violin students. Learning to play an instrument is hard enough, and without the proper size instrument it can be nearly impossible. I have seen excellent students cry with frustration because a violin was too big for their small hands. Imagine trying to learn to ride a bike with a bike that is too big for your body. You would be lucky to succeed, and even luckier if you don't hurt yourself.
With your generous support we are able to give our violin students all the tools necessary for them to succeed. Thank you all very much!”

V is for Violin
Funded Sep 3, 2013Thank you all for your support of our music program. Now in the second year of our violin program, we have acquired enough working violins for every violin student to have his/her own violin to use in class.
The only way to learn an instrument is to spend lots of time playing it. Thanks to you, all of our violin students get more time with violins in their hands. They are making lots of progress through our violin book everyday. We have given one performance already this year, and plan to feature the violins in a few more performances in the spring. Then we'll look to next year and build off our successes to make the violin program even bigger!”
