My students are learning how to define important problems and brainstorm, test, and build solutions for them. Arduino is an easy tool for fast prototyping, aimed at students without a background in electronics and programming. It teaches students programming, electronics, and technology while enabling the creation of powerful solutions, from everyday objects to complex scientific instruments. With an Arduino board, my students will be able to build devices to solve real-world problems. Arduino boards are able to read inputs - temperature, sound, light, touch - and turn them into outputs - activating a motor, turning on an LED, sending an alert, whatever my students can dream up. At this time I am asking for 25 boards, which will be shared among my classes. Some example projects include: building a heart rate monitor to monitor an athlete's risk of heat exhaustion or stroke and providing instant feedback to a coach; building an air quality sensor to detect local air pollution and automate a warning to our community; building a humidity sensor to monitor the dryness of plants and activate a watering system.
