Why LEGO Mindstorms EV3 instead of a different robot? EV3s are being used in scientific research beyond K-12 classrooms: from studies of artificial intelligence using the neural networks of a nematode worm to Cambridge scientists using Mindstorms to build bone-making robots. EV3s can be used by our school in classroom applications for our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) classrooms and before/after school clubs, like FIRST LEGO League (FLL). Students need hands-on opportunities to learn STEAM concepts and problem solving skills. I want to help prepare my students for success in the real world where employers value collaboration and problem solving skills. I will be running two FLL teams in which students will be developing their research, critical thinking, team-building, and presentation skills as they solve real-world math and science problems. I will be teaching a STEM Robotics 101 class allowing students to further explore the world of robotics. I am eager to see what my students will come up with and feel well prepared after receiving professional development over the summer. I also plan on introducing my Math 8 class to programming with EV3. As I just completed professional development exploring a math curriculum supplement that helps teach math concepts, like systems of equations, in a hands-on way using EV3 robots. Utilizing Mindstorms in my teaching allows students to build higher level thinking skills in a fun and engaging learning experience. The overall goal of this project is to provide the resources that will allow my students to be more actively engaged in the learning process and to ignite a spark in my students that inspires them to ask questions, explore topics, and problem solve in every aspect of their lives. Thank you for supporting my students and preparing them for their futures!
