Currently our ability to conduct labs in physics is very low tech; meters sticks, stop watches and hand drawn (or occasionally excel created) graphs. While this method works, it often leads to inaccurate data sets and students making incorrect conclusions about physics principles; this hinders their learning and is the opposite of what hands on learning should accomplish. These sensors would allow us to take labs into the 21st century. Students would be able to get better, more precise data which will yield more accurate conclusions. Even though this is one piece of equipment it allows us to perform labs over 4 units, or approximately 6 months of learning within both the AP Physics and Regular Physics classrooms. This equipment also requires no other additional equipment, students can use their phones or classroom computers to analyze data digitally. The best part about having this equipment available to students is that is provides equitable experiences for ALL of our students. Our students who come from wealthier households have access to tutors, are college bound and overall have more available to them than our lower income students. Having this equipment gives a shared experience between ALL students. It gives non-college and college bound students the chance to work with equipment that is commonly used in college science laboratories; preparing some for their next phase in education and allowing others an opportunity that they may not have otherwise.
