These manipulatives included in this project will allow students to make real life, hands-on connections in mathematics and science. It will provide them a strong foundation in number sense and algebraic thinking. These tools will give them strategies to help them persevere through difficult content and understand it at both abstract and concrete levels.
Specifically, the interlocking base ten blocks and unifix cubes will allow students to compose and decompose numbers and help them to truly see and understand place value in relation to numbers. Two-sided counters are a valuable tool for addition and subtraction. These counters allow students to have two parts and make them into one whole or have one whole and take away a part.
The magnetic money will be used in class as a positive behavior reinforcement as well as an opportunity to practice counting realistic money. The snap circuit, which includes snap wires, slide switches, an alarm circuit, a music integrated circuit, and a speaker, combine to create working circuit boards just like the ones found inside televisions, radios, and other electronic devices, thus allowing real life, hand-on learning opportunities.
Students LOVE learning and especially LOVE learning opportunities where they can "see" and "work" through problems with a hands-on approach.
I'm confident that if students are provided the necessary tools and scaffolding they will be successful scholars and will develop a life-long love for learning and problem solving!!
