Getting Ready!
Funded May 19, 2015Thank you for your generous contribution to my classroom. I so appreciate the pencil grips, bins and calendars. The pencil grips have proven to be a boon to those students struggling with the correct pencil grip. In utilizing the pencil grip they have been able to improve their handwriting and they don't become as tired from the writing process. This has been very beneficial for them. The bins have helped me to organize student work. The students know where to locate materials, this in turn is helping them develop the independence to forge ahead with individual work.
The calendars are a most wonderful tool in my mathematical thinking kit. We begin each month with a discussion of the coming events, holidays, trips, birthdays, etc. We complete a shared calendar with the dates in the right position for the upcoming month. The students are then challenged to complete each date in the calendar month in a different mathematical way. They use all of the math strategies they have learned to date to show what the date is. For example, the 5th might be shown as 'V" for the roman numeral, the number 16 might be shown as 4+4+4+4. Each month the students build on their math knowledge to create a highly individualized calendar! They decorate the calendar with appropriate pictures for that month. My students enjoy this activity and look forward to the first school day of each month!
Thank you for affording us this terrific opportunity to build on our math knowledge!”

Table Time
Funded Dec 28, 2014"Awesome!", "Wow!" and "Oooooh!" were wonderful to hear when we received the horseshoe shape table for our classroom. However, the best was seeing my students rush to claim the table for partner work and group activities. They are very taken with this table and have suggested that I get more tables like this so that everyone can always use them. Additionally, they have told me that they are far more comfortable working with other students at this table than they were in other configurations. Their work is definitely neater and better organized.
This wonderful resource is used in a variety of ways. I use it to confer with students both individually and in small groups. It affords me the space and setting to truly hear my students and coach into their needs. My students in turn are given the opportunity to work in partnerships or small groups in a comfortable and designated area. They are able to talk with their partner (or group) more openly than when sitting at individual desks.
I am grateful to have received this table as it has eased student interaction. My materials are at the ready and I can easily have students join me to work on specific activities. I do not have to disrupt students who are working at their desks in order to help their neighbor. My students are working cooperatively on a higher level. They are pleased to be assigned partner work and enjoy the activities.”
