Encouraging students to read novels is challenging, especially when they cannot relate to the story. Establishing a library of updated novels that reflect the diverse culture we serve, will motivate students to read more. In class, students will have the opportunity to select a book of their interest, to take home and read. Once students have read the book, they will conduct a TED Talk inspired digital book talk for their peers. These book talks will be published to the school website for teachers to share and use as instructional resources for future lessons. It will also encourage other students to read the book. These books will provide my students with a library of grade level books, with complex text, that also tell stories that reflect and connect to their own experiences. These books will not only give students practice reading, but they will be exposed to multiple genres of writing as well. Students will read and analyze poetry, short stories, and non-fiction text. They will also improve their presentation, writing, and public speaking skills.
