These books will not only improve their school lives but all of our lives in general. My Gifted students are leaders in our school. I feel it is my duty to make them empathetic, kind people. We are a Title 1 school with students of all socioeconomic backgrounds. This story (soon to be a motion picture that I'm very excited about) will teach us about the struggles a student with facial deformities has in school and how other students react to his struggles. As we learn this valuable lesson of kindness, we will also learn how to analyze text, track character development, and determine author's theme. The students will read the novel Wonder and answer FSA style questions, use technology (stop action video, Sliderocket, Dipity) to demonstrate understanding of character development and author's theme. The Giant Blocks will be utilized to provide multiple choice answers to common core style choices in an engaging format. Each student will select one block labeled A,B,C, or D in answer to a question while also analyzing their block choice with the goal of keeping the tower standing. Students will take the lessons learned from this book and design and create backpack tags using the Shrinky Dinks to share kindness throughout the entire school. We will consult 365 Days of Wonder for daily reminders of why kindness counts. The other books (We're All Wonders and Augie and Me) will be added to my classroom library for students to borrow and further explore this heartfelt story and precepts to live by. Each student will design a poster further demonstrating their precepts to live by. Fostering kindness among all students and genuine understanding of empathy for people less fortunate will provide a valuable real world lesson.
