We are an inner-city school in Chicago. Over 95% receive free/reduced lunch. Our students enjoy all the things that everyone else enjoys except that they often feel cheated by society. Their building is in poor condition, the gym is also the auditorium, there are no lockers for middle school students, and I could go on. Even so, they are funny, smart, and resilient. I want them to know that I care and so do others about closing the socio/economic gap any way we can.
My students are fascinated by technology and participate in our digital world daily. I want them to see that the power of digital tools goes beyond social media and games. In addition, being digital citizens comes with responsibilities. I believe that breaking down the walls of their experience, using technology to differentiate instruction, and giving my students digital literacy/citizenship skills are huge steps in the right direction.
