Unlock the Math Grit!
Funded Aug 12, 2017I am super excited to jumpstart my school year with breakout challenges in the classroom. Your generous support inspire and permit me to keep trying innovative classroom activities. I am confident that the students are going to love breakout. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Please look forward to some great pictures of engaged students breaking out soon!”

Charging into the Future @ GMS
Funded Oct 2, 2016The impact on my classroom has been tremendous. We have been able to maximize the amount of space that we have in this classroom. You may notice in the pictures that the charger was mounted above an existing cabinet. This allows me to keep all my existing footprint space for the students. I am able to distribute and collect our chrome books in a clockwise manner near the front of the room. It makes the use of technology orderly and efficient. We are able to access our online instruction without major disruptions. Students are able access the technology on their own. Most importantly, your donation has allowed both me and another teacher to have access to a chrome book charging station. The district has saved over $1100 because of your generous donation. We are hopeful that another classroom will be getting a set of chrome books soon.
Thank you very much for all of your support. Please don't forget that your donation is tax deductible. I can help you find your printout if you need it. Please don't hesitate to email me.”

Lego Robotics = Fun And Learning III
Funded Sep 16, 2014Thank you all for donating to our Lego Robotics project! I currently have a total of six Lego robots available to my students. I have been running a lunch time lego group. The kids love them. They come in and build daily. In a few weeks, I will be starting an after school program for even more kids. It's going to be great. I have kids coming up to me in the hall asking when they can join the Lego group. It feels really good to be able to offer something that motivates and develops curiosity at the same time.
I have been furiously trying to get myself ready to use the robots in a meaningful and more academic manner. I have been going through an online Lego class. Over winter break, I learned how to create Lego programs, build lesson plans within the Lego software, and how to access all of the sensors and export the data.
This project is dovetailing nicely with my computers class. It is helping the students use their problem solving skills to overcome tasks with computer coding. The best part is watching the persistence being instilled into the kids. They get frustrated, but they are not giving in when they have a difficult time figuring out a task.
The students LOVE the Lego robotics. I know it helps them feel like we are becoming a more complete school with some extra curricular opportunities coming back. Thank you from the kids. Thank you from me. You're the best!”

Technology for Kids (3)- Learning Beyond the Book!
Funded Apr 12, 2014It gives me great pleasure and pride to describe what our kids' have done with the pads in the last few months. In a typical day I will have students coming in EARLY to class to play chess against each other. They also like to play logic games and engineering games. They are really helpful to be able to offer students a stimulating activity before class begins.
We have primarily used the ipads in math and social studies. In math, the ipads help me differentiate instruction for the students. Some kids need more practice and some need to be pushed to higher levels. The ipads allow me to do this in the classroom quickly without wasted learning time.
In Social Studies we ended the year with a large Shark Tank project that is tied into our economics unit. The students researched and created a presentation in hopes of having their business financially supported by our "Sharks." We researched a wide variety of needs for a business startup like wholesale prices of chiles, food truck prices, to how much it costs to rent space in a business plaza. Some students used the ipads to help create Prezi's. These are digital presentations that really look sharp.
You can see from the pictures that we took the ipads to our marine center field trip. The kids had a blast on the field trip and they loved taking pictures to preserve the memories.
Lastly, I love the fact kids are learning how to check their own grades on the ipad. One of my major goals is to get students to see technology as an efficient way to support their learning rather than an expensive toy. I had nearly fifty percent of the seventh grade class come and see me and ask how to access their own grades. Once word got out that I was teaching this, I had a few high school kids drop by asking me to show them how. When I can get a kid to empower themselves and their education, I know I've started to make a positive difference.”

Technology For Kids (2)- Learning Beyond The Book!
Funded Apr 2, 2014It is my pleasure to correspond with my donors and describe great benefits I am seeing in class. I start my morning with kids streaming into the room before school asking to use the pads. They are playing logic games, chess and working with engineering apps.
We used the iPads in our Social Studies and Math classes. In Social Studies we used them to support our "Shark Tank" project. Students were asked to start a business and present a request for startup money to the class. They used the tablets to research wholesale pricing, business locations, costs of food trucks and more. Some students even created a prezi presentation off the iPad. They were able to project their prezi for the entire class to see. It was quite impressive and the kids really enjoyed putting together fun speeches.
In Math, the ipads help me differentiate instruction for the students. Some kids need more practice and some need to be pushed to higher levels. The ipads allow me to do this in the classroom quickly without wasted learning time. They have immediate access to our math web support called IXL.com. All of our math testing is now done exclusively on computers so this helps get practice using the technology before a high stakes test.
