Scrabbling and Strategy for Science
Funded Dec 3, 2019Thank you so much for helping to fund my project. We had a chance to use the games the day before our December vacation and it worked out great! At first, some of the students seemed a little hesitant, as though it was going to be awful to have to focus on vocabulary. Once they learned the rules and began to play, they all seemed interested in creating the best words they could!
One of the rules we created for "Science Scrabble" was that if they used a science vocabulary word, they got double points automatically. It was great to see them working together (I allowed them to work in pairs against another pair of opponents) to try and use one of the words we have been utilizing in class.
Vocabulary is one of the areas we are focusing on as part of the new standards being implemented in our classrooms. This was a great way to have the students interact with vocabulary in a new way. It also gave them a chance to use strategy to try and beat their opponent, something you don't often see in my science classroom. Again, thank you for your continued support of my classroom and for helping to make science fun for my students.”

Funded Nov 22, 2019I can't thank you enough. The cart is VERY useful in the classroom. It took awhile for me to put it together, as I am not the best at things like that which you can see from the photos, but once I got it done I was able to move things around quite well. I am also using it as a stand in the front of the room. I put materials and handouts on it that the students will need for the day, and they can access them as required. We had a lab activity yesterday that used glassware. Normally I have to walk back and forth several times to get things set up properly, but the cart allowed me to do it all at once, and setting up went much quicker than usual. It was also helpful when I had to put everything away. Now that I have it, I think I might need another one! Please know that your continued support of my classroom and DonorsChoose is much appreciated by all who use the website. Again, many thanks.”

Scientific Measurements
Funded Aug 14, 2019I can't thank you enough. I used the materials in class yesterday with my 8th grade students. It went so well! These new materials are replacing sets that are old and made of flimsy plastic that leak and are very difficult to read. The students were not only able to complete the activity, but they seem to have a better understanding of how to use these tools than I have been able to teach in the past. It has always been difficult for them to read an accurate measurement but this set fixed that problem.
There are so many other ideas I have, and I am looking forward to using the graduated cylinders again. My 7th grade students will soon be learning about density. In the past it has been a difficult concept for them to truly grasp, but I think being able to measure the volume of irregular solids using these will help them to better comprehend the material. And, the cleaning brushes came in very handy!
Again, I thank you!”

Funded Dec 24, 2018When the students first saw the delivered materials in January, they were excited that we had gotten funded and were looking forward to using the Battleship games. However, it wasn't until this past week that we got to open them, set them up, and begin utilizing them in the classroom.
The kids were happy to be able to play the game and they definitely see how it relates to our Earth's coordinate system. By using the the letters and numbers in the game to try and find their opponents ships, they are actually using lines of latitude (the letters) and longitude (the numbers). They were able to see how the coordinate system can be used to find locations on the Earth. Understanding coordinate systems is important in several Science classes they will take in the future as well as for graphing in Math classes.
I can't thank my donors enough. Making science learning fun for my students is one of my overall goals as a teacher. By using this simple game, we are able to take what some of them find to be a challenging subject and make it more interesting. The more interesting something is for a student, the better they will comprehend the subject matter. Again, my most sincere thank you to all who donated.”

Keeping Our Lab Clean
Funded Nov 19, 2018Usually when we do lab work that involves glassware, I have to leave it drying on the lab tables in the classroom. I recently got a sink and have been using the surrounding counter instead. It is always crowded and I am concerned that something will fall and break. Not anymore! We completed a lab today in class that used glassware. For the first time, I was able to hang the pieces to dry on the racks that were purchased. It was wonderful! Not only did everything fit, but they dried more quickly than before. I was able to clean the glassware, let it dry, and return it to the cabinet before I left for the day. When I walk in tomorrow the only thing I will have to do will be to set up for the current work.
The students found it very amusing how happy I was. They couldn't believe that something as simple as a drying rack would make me so happy. I can't wait until next time when they are the ones that get to do the cleanup. Now that we have the racks, they can do it before they leave for their next class. Learning proper lab techniques is not only about microscopes and triple beam balances. It is also about being sanitary and taking care of materials properly. Thank you so much from all of us!”

Divide and Conquer
Funded Sep 17, 2018I really can't thank you enough. Not only did they serve their purpose, but the students actually liked using them. The boards make them feel like they have a little privacy in a space that usually gives them none. I asked if students would rather I try to separate them some other way and almost all of them said they prefer to use the boards when we have tests and quizzes. I have some other uses in mind for them in the future and plan on sharing them with some other teachers that don't like to move desks on test days. Thank you so much for your generosity!”

Slides and Samples for Science
Funded May 8, 2011My students were very excited when the package came from donorschoose.org. We had used slides earlier in the year, but these were special because they really got to see something they were familiar with - bugs! Looking at cells is fun for them, but to be able to recognize what you are seeing and to view it so close made it even better for the students. It is the generosity of people and corporations like you that keep wonderful websites such as this going. Having the supplies needed to better my classroom is sometimes challenging but you made it a possibility.”

Funded Apr 20, 2011Thank you so much for your donation to my project on donorschoose.org. My students were excited when I put the plasma globe on my desk and they got to see how it works. They loved trying it themselves and they had a lot of questions, some of them that I couldn't answer! They spent some time using the Internet to find the answers themselves. They also enjoyed the microscope slides so much that I put up another project to get more of them so we could complete an entire lab activity with the whole class.
Again, thank you.”

Funded Nov 5, 2010I am glad I have this chance to thank you for your generosity. I greatly appreciate your donation that allowed me to get enough density cube sets for my classroom. We used the sets this past week for a lab that was the culmination of several days of class time devoted to understanding the concept of density. In the past, I do not think I was able to really get the concept across to my students as well as I was able to this year. The density sets allowed the children to really see how you can have more or less matter in the same amount of space.
I am looking forward to using these sets again next year and am hoping to come up with new labs and activities for the students to complete using the cubes.
Thank you again for your generosity.”

Funded Nov 26, 2010I want to say thank you for your donations that enabled me to receive a camera to use in the classroom. The students have already taken pictures of their work on their science exit projects. As part of the project they have to create a Powerpoint presentation. Adding pictures and video, both of which can be downloaded from the camera, adds interest and originality to their presentations.
The students also took pictures of animals that we had visiting our classroom. They also plan on using the camera to capture the fun of their Senior Trip and other school events they will be participating in this year.
Again, thank you from my students and myself. Your generosity is truly appreciated.”
