I teach an Integrated Co-teaching (ICT) first grade class in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. My students are inquisitive, eager young learners. Ranging from 6 to 7 years old, they are natives of the Caribbean Islands, Central America, and South America. My students have a pulsating thirst for gaining new skills and knowledge. They put 101% effort into all of their work, even when confronted with obstacles. When confronted with a challenge, class 1-2 likes to say it is "coo-coo bananas," and tackle it as a united front. With every success, no matter how big or small, the students "kiss their brains" and "hug their hearts" for a job well done. Although the majority of my 21 students are currently performing below grade level, this data does not define them as learners. The beauty of an ICT model lies in the natural sense of community within the classroom. Students work together and learn from one another.
