A study put out by the Cooperative Children's Book Center (UW-Madison) in 2018 found that only 1% of published children's books depicted an American Indian/First Nations character. The study also found that 27% used animals as main characters and 50% were white characters. There are so many talented authors of color willing to share their experiences, and I would like to celebrate and showcase their books. Students deserve to read and hear authentic diverse stories. The books will be able to be used across content areas, and bring authenticity to students' learning. A classroom library that is culturally relevant and appropriate supports students' cultural heritage and identity. Students will also get to know and praise other cultures that are different than their own. These books can be used to showcase skills such as: poetic devices, problem solving, key ideas and details, lesson/moral, character traits, point of view, human systems, historical thinking, change over time, cultures, compare and contrast. The list goes on and on!
