Safety First
Funded May 8, 2015Thank you so much for helping us obtain some much needed equipment and signage for our new lab! The lab was supposed to be completed on September 8th, but the construction just began in September. This has not dampened our spirits, however! We are still very excited about being able to get our students into a brand new, state of the art lab which will be well equipped and well labeled with appropriate signs thanks to you. The pictures I've shared show the pre-demolition state of the room, which had been built in the 70's and had become unsafe, the empty walls and room that will now be fitted and filled for new furniture and equipment and some of our students showing off the great signage that we were able to purchase through Donors Choose.
Our students come from extremely different educational backgrounds and many of them will be able to conduct their very first hands-on Chemistry, Biology or Physics lab in this facility. These days our district is strapped for resources and to have this lab come to fruition is so exciting!!
Thank you again for all your help!!”

Ms. Taylor
Hurricane Island Here We Come!
Funded Jul 10, 2014Every morning on Hurricane Island our students woke to a gorgeous sunrise and the promise of many new experiences. I have told several people when asked about the trip that it is by far the most wonderful thing I've had the chance to do as an educator in my 23 years of service. It was memorable beyond my wildest dreams and beneficial to my students in ways that I could not have anticipated.
The 29 students that I had the privilege to take were exposed to field science in a way that could not be done with a day trip to the Jersey shore or a near by forest. They were immersed in the experience and had four solid days of exposure to lessons about the flora and fauna of the island and the surrounding waters. Other lessons about the value of natural resources were driven home by experiencing a limitation of the amount of electricity and water that was available to them during our time on the island. The Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership is working hard to be a fully sustainable environment with electricity provide by a solar array, water from a freshwater quarry pond that is treated on the island and various gardens that produce organic foods for the staff and visitors on the island.
I can't thank each of you enough for the amazing experience that I was able to give my students in large part due to your generosity.”

This classroom project was brought to life by 100 Women in Hedge Funds and 103 other donors.Microbiology to the Max
Funded Dec 31, 2013On behalf of the students in Mrs. Hanlin's class in my Science Department we are so grateful for your care and support of the work we do. I sat in on the lab activity that the students participated in and it was so fun to see the excitement and appreciation they had of being able to conduct this lab. It is difficult to find ways of engage students in inquiry based labs with the limited resources that we have, so your generosity is all that much more appreciated since the materials we received really enabled students to experiment in the true sense of the word.
We had students test the efficiency of various cleaners in the fight against microbes. They were able to design their own experiments with a little guidance. The results gave students much to think about and discuss.
Thank you so much.”

Instruments are Instrumental
Funded Apr 30, 2013What a wonderful experience we had using our new instruments during our first lab activity of the year. I was so encouraged as I prepared to have students work with the measuring tools. Being able to take clear, accurate measurements with these instruments will enable me to really help students focus on analyzing data properly rather than focus on whether their tools work right in the first place.
I can't begin express my thanks enough to those of you that contributed to creating a more modern, working science lab that our students can learn from and I can be proud of.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Taylor
