Students are seated most of the day and often, children are stuck in those hard plastic navy blue chairs that we all remember (and not very fondly). Kids are restricted by these seats and expecting each and every child who comes into my class to all focus and learn the same is a highly unrealistic expectation. My goal as a teacher to have each student succeed in whatever ways they need to. And that's where flexible seating comes in! Flexible seating allows for students to exercise more control over their lives, explore their independence, have more accountability over their own learning as well as giving them more opportunities to work cooperatively with their peers. Students can easily use the bean bags and the wobble chairs to nestle in a corner or under desks (they love sitting and doing their work under the desks, they feel very Ninja-like!). The stools also allow students have more physical freedom as they work together on their assignments. When students are tasked with choosing their own seat, and where in the room they will use it, they are taking a direct and active handle over their own learning. Promoting independence and cooperative learning can only help the future leaders of our world, and that is my ultimate mission as their teacher.
