Our school has created, built, and maintained a class garden and outdoor classroom area. This area has become much more than “just” a garden. The students have grown succulents, flowers, tomatoes, sunflowers and numerous other items. The students work in the garden learning to grow food, understand the purpose of gardens and the responsibility it takes to maintain a garden. The students take ownership, daily, for their items in the garden (weeding and watering and pruning). Working in the garden burns more calories than many activities, this allows students to dream, imagine, and produce plants and foods that they cultivate. Working in the outdoors allows students the opportunity to get fresh air, let their brains function beyond a book or technology activity, and get understand more of their environment and community. The outdoor learning center will allow Santee Success to take the classroom outdoors. Students can do science experiments, observations, and students have become active participants, gained Universal Access to learning and understanding, and continue with a Growth Mindset. The outdoor learning center allows access for life skills and coping skills; working together and getting dirty in the outdoor classroom, has shown to promote collaboration and team building which has resulted in a positive school climate. This project will provide more tools, like a sweeper, a hose reel, new hoses, and other items.
