Recent studies suggest that "math anxiety" among students is on the rise. Some of this anxiety comes from the thought that "math is too hard." I can't tell you how many times I've heard a student say, "I just am not going to use this ever!" This is frustrating for both student and teacher, especially as I firmly believe that all students have the ability to apply academic concepts to every day thinking. All students are problem-solvers, mathematicians by nature, especially when they have the ability to succeed by breaking problems apart into manageable pieces with multiple possible solutions. By making math a game, every day problem solving becomes a quick and easy routine in which student engage, boosting confidence and excitement in their own abilities. Games such as Zeus on the Loose and 24 make quick calculation second nature in races to win; Kingdomino and Skiwampus bring new strategies around both math and spacial reasoning into student toolboxes; SET reinforces pattern-finding, a useful tool for breaking problems into pieces and using prior knowledge. With these games and consistent practice, students gain a sense of math as something that is not scary and which can be used in many situations!
