When you arrive at your favorite coffee shop, you are provided a myriad of seating options. Will you sit at the high-top table? Will you choose a community bench? Or, maybe you'll choose the comfy armchair by the fireplace. You are free to make your own choice. You can choose a place that you will be comfortable and a place you'll be productive (on your laptop, reading the newspaper, or just enjoying your coffee). We know that breaks and interruptions after periods of focused activity actually help in learning; I’ve come to the conclusion that desks promote compliance, while coffee shop-style seating encourages community-building through increased and intentional emphasis on communication and collaboration. As I start my fourth year teaching and my first year teaching in Madison, I will be implementing flexible seating in my classroom; my classroom will be student-driven and designed with the 21st-century student in mind. If my classroom is granted Hokki stools, my scholars will get to learn while moving. This can alleviate anxiety and help get extra energy out while remaining respectful and in-control. As a teacher, I strongly believe that schooling and educational environments need to inspire and support scholars. Hokki stools would help me provide my fourth graders with a learning space I believe in and that will boost our academic performance, increase attention spans, and inspire a joyful learning environment. The colorful book bins will help keep student materials organized and brighten up the classroom. Because students will not have a permanent desk, supplies will need to be stored creatively. The neon book bins will be wonderful homes for students' reading material. Thank you in advance for your support!
