Making History Come Alive
Funded Jan 1, 2018I can't thank you enough for the this opportunity to invigorate my U.S. History classroom with exciting activities and simulations. My students loved the activities, and now I can pass along the materials to other teachers who will be teaching U.S. History in the future.
In the state of Florida, U.S. History students are subject to a rigorous end-of-course test, so this class can be very stressful for those kids. Programs like History Alive help inspire an interest in history despite the immense pressure of testing. One of my students' favorite activities was a center-based assignment where they learned about the struggle for equality among historically oppressed groups including women, Mexican-Americans, and African-Americans. My classroom is quite diverse, so for many students this was their first opportunity to directly connect with their personal histories.
Without donors such as you supporting my classroom, my students would never have access to the History Alive curriculum. I can't thank you enough.”

A.P. Test Prep for All
Funded Dec 26, 2017Many of my students are preparing for three or more Advanced Placement exams, so the cost burden of review is massive. The Albert.io technology relieved that burden upon students who often struggle to afford basic needs, let alone expensive test preparation.
I used Albert.io throughout the year as a homework assignment to help students prepare for unit tests. Most students reported that the practice was instrumental in helping them score well on those tests, and I saw an overall improvement of student test scores since the grant came through.
Currently, my students are cramming for the A.P. U.S. Government and A.P. Macroeconomics exams, and Albert is a key piece of that final test prep. Hopefully, students will earn college credit by passing their A.P. exams, which will further reduce the cost of their education as they move forward.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your support!”

Funded Oct 10, 2017The Albert.io program is transformative. I cannot thank you enough for your support. My students' test scores are improving over last year's already, and it is amazing to see how much they benefit from the Albert practice. One of the best aspects of Albert is that my students actually enjoy the practice because they get instant feedback, and then I can assign them credit in class for completing that practice.
Half of my Advanced Placement students are on free or reduced school lunch, so I am grateful that I was able to provide exam prep to them for free. Several students expressed relief that they didn't have to purchase exam review guides for A.P. Macroeconomics and A.P. U.S. Government since the now have Albert.
Thank you for supporting my students and supporting their achievement. The Albert practice is already helping students understand the material better and earn better scores on my tests, so I look forward to their success on the Advanced Placement tests at the end of the year. Without generous donors such as you, I would not be able to share these great resources with my students.”

Funded Sep 22, 2017My seniors were thrilled to receive their pocket constitutions today, and we put them to use right away. Today, we discussed the First Amendment rights of NFL players who knelt during the "Star Spangled Banner," and my students used their brand new constitutions to read and refer to the text in the Bill of Rights. They were surprised to discover that the First Amendment protects individuals from Congress, but not necessary their employers, and it led to a fantastic classroom discussion. I plan to have the students refer to U.S. Constitution frequently as we learn about the U.S. Government.
Additionally, my students were so impressed and moved that donors cared enough to buy these books for them. Many, many students said that they will be keeping the pocket constitutions for the rest of their lives, to refer to if they are in legal trouble, or just curious about the law. Your generosity has touched and inspired many, many students, and you have helped me create a culture of citizenship and inquiry in my classroom.
Thank you for supporting my classroom and my students' civic literacy.”

Special Needs Students Brew Up Success
Funded Oct 11, 2016Thank you genuinely for your generous donation to the special needs students at Edgewater High School. With this large coffee maker, the Best Buddies coffee business can go mobile by brewing coffee and delivering it to faculty meetings and school events. The students are so excited about their new coffee maker, and they are looking forward to learning how to use it.
Students deliver coffee to faculty and staff every day under the supervision of special education instructor Kyle Leisher. The students are learning how to make coffee, and now tea and hot cocoa, how to conduct quality control, count out money and change, politely collect funds from customers who run a tab, customer service, bookkeeping skills, and the experience of running a successful business on their own terms. Profits from the coffee sales are used to keep the business running, to provide unique learning experiences for the students, and for a college tuition scholarship fund for outstanding student volunteers who help out students with unique needs.
Thank you again for your generous support that will impact students this year, next year, and for many years to come.”

Special Needs Students Brew Up Success
Funded Aug 30, 2016Thank you for donating aprons to special needs students for their coffee business at Edgewater High School. Every time the students receive a package, it's a special event. The kids were thrilled to receive their aprons, which will be embroidered with the Edgewater High School logo.
Students wear the aprons when they prepare coffee, hot cocoa, and tea. They also wear them when they deliver beverages to classrooms every morning, always with a smile. The student enjoy having a realistic uniform that is preparing them for future careers in hospitality, which is a huge industry in Orlando.
The students take great pride in their work, and they are proud to wear their uniforms as they deliver coffee to grateful faculty and staff.”

Coffee Business For Special Kids
Funded Aug 26, 2016This project was special because it was funded by a gift certificate from Donor's Choose, so I chose to use the funds to help start a coffee delivery service at Edgewater High School with a great group of special kids. The kids were thrilled to open the packages and sort through all of the materials. Each package that arrived was an adventure for the kids, who take great pride in their work.
Since this first project, the special education teacher has secured a business partnership with a local coffee shop, Credo. In the pictures, you'll see kids writing inspirational messages on each coffee cup sleeve.
This is an ongoing project that would not have been possible without the generosity of Donors Choose, Edgewater High school, and Credo Coffee. Thank you for your support!”

Changing the World Through Microfinance
Funded Jul 9, 2015Thank you for donating these books and video to my classroom. My students are funding microfinance projects through the non-profit organization Kiva, and these books have helped them understand the history of finance and the important role that their donations serve in the global economy. Primarily, my economics club students have been using the books and viewing the video, however, I will be using the books and video with all of my economics students when we start our banking and finance unit.
As you can see in the photos, my students are excited about these books. The books include illustrations and vignettes that really make history come alive! Finance and monetary policy can be a dry topic, but my students absolutely love these books. For example, the book describes one of the first "junk bond" scandals in the 1700's with humor, illustrated with political cartoons that made my students laugh out loud.
I cannot thank you enough for giving my students this opportunity to learn more about the context within which they are donating to entrepreneurs in the developing world. My school district does not support literacy projects in economics classes, so without your support, I would never have been able to provide my students with this experience. Many of them have committed to continue to support microfinance projects when they go to college because they have a deeper understanding of the huge impact of a few small donations.”

Help Bring My Civics Classroom Into the 21st Century!
Funded Mar 11, 2014Words can't describe how grateful I am that you've donated this printer to my classroom! My students have already gotten so much use out of the printer. As soon as I set it up, I was printing out Spanish language enrichment materials and extra copies of homework that students had forgotten to turn in. My students were working on a U.S. Supreme Court case analysis using their textbooks, but the book's summary of Bush v. Gore was confusing. I was able to print out a class set of case briefs, in English and Spanish, for my students immediately; I did not have to wait until my planning period to support student learning with supplemental resources.
The printer has been especially helpful for struggling students, who often do not want to wait until I have time to print out supplemental resources for them, or assignments that they are missing and/or need to redo. Being able to print out resources for students on demand has made a huge impact on the grades of my most vulnerable students; many students who were struggling with low grades due to missing work have now completed that work since I can print out extra copies for them in class.
I supply my classroom with everything that my students need to be successful, but a quality printer was outside of my budget. I am so very grateful and honored that you chose to support this project. My students are genuinely grateful for the convenience of a printer, and it has definitely helped me serve my students' needs more efficiently.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Smith
