Fun & Games in After School!
Funded Oct 3, 2018We are grateful for your generous donations. We now have an abundance of games and activities for students to use during the after school program. These materials are not just fun- they all help students build important skills like problem solving and team work.
During the after school program, students are separated into multi-level groups and rotate through teacher led clubs throughout the week. Teachers create clubs to meet their students' needs and interests. The received materials can be used by any age student in any group. What we love most about these materials is that they encourage older students, like fourth graders, to work with younger students.
I can confidently say most of our 200 students in the after school program have used the materials, and so far, every student enjoys the hands on experience. One student recently shared that he used to get bored easily in after school, but now there are a lot more games and activities he can enjoy. Teachers are also thrilled they now have materials, like Dash robots, to create lessons with.
My students, fellow teachers, and I can not say thank you enough.”

Full STEAM Ahead
Funded Sep 29, 2017Thank you for your generous contributions to our donors chose project. The materials purchased are being used daily in our after school clubs. Students are working together to build Lego structures as well as play board games such as Perfection.
Students are so excited to use our new materials! Upon the materials delivery, students opened the boxes and were very grateful and in awe of everything they had to use during after school. Students are showing a renewed interested in after school programming and look forward to using the new materials.
As students get used to building with the Legos we have received, after school teachers will implement Lego challenges. Students will work collaboratively in teams to solve building challenges. These activities will help students think critically and develop strong communication skills.
We can not express our thanks enough!”

Funded Sep 26, 2016Thank you so much for your generous contribution. Our classroom revolves around reading. One of our big class goals is for students to develop a life long love of reading. Your contributions helped make this goal attainable. We have received brand new fiction and non fiction books, and a class subscription to Time for Kids Magazine.
Students love our new books! Every night, students must read as part of their homework. They are eagerly completing their reading each night because they have access to brand new, high-interest books. These books help teach students about historical events, such as the Civil Rights Movement. They also provide entertainment and laughter while teaching students about important themes, such perseverance and friendship.
We use our Time Magazines during literacy class. Students read about current events and apply reading strategies. They are not only learning how to identify the main idea of an article, but they are learning about real world events, such as the Presidential Election. Time Magazine keeps my students engaged while they apply 4th grade reading skills.
Words cannot express our gratitude; thank you for helping us develop a life long love of reading!”

Strong Readers, Strong Leaders
Funded Dec 18, 2015Thank you so much for your generous contribution to our classroom project, Strong Readers, Strong Readers! My students were very excited to receive their very own, brand new headphones. The new headphones revitalized their interest in Lexi. The program provides targeted phonics and comprehensions interventions for students on their level. The program speaks directions and explanations, so having a good pair of headphones makes a great difference.
Data from Lexi reveals student's reading levels are improving. In the past marking period, one third of my student's reading levels have improved from a second grade level to a third grade level. Many students made this jump because their fluency and phonics improved. I feel Lexi played a key role in this jump.
Thank you again for supporting our classroom. My students and I are grateful and value your contributions.”

Funded Aug 24, 2015Thank you for supporting literacy in our classroom. We have been exploring fourth grade literacy skills while reading our brand new books. In fourth grade, we learning how to identify the theme of a story and support the theme with evidence from the text. We are also learning about character traits and the different ways an author explicitly or implicitly describes a character's personality. Students practice these skill with the fiction books we received.
In our classroom, we explore reading throughout the day. During reading comprehension class, we learn common core aligned skills such as sequencing events, identifying character traits, and drawing conclusions. After our lessons, students read a book of their choice from our library and practice the skill we learned.
All of my students love the new books! Their favorite is the Magic Tree House series. They love following the characters through their adventures. Many students also enjoy the interactive history books, which allow them to step into the shoes of a person during a historical event.
The books have fueled a love of literacy and helped build a culture of reading and discussing books in our room.”

Ms. Pompei
