Help Us Get New Classroom Library Books!

Funded Oct 25, 2017

I want to start off with another expression of gratitude for supporting my students. My students were so excited the day that their new books arrived into our classroom!

In my classroom, we have time for structured reading. After a brief mini-lesson, my students are given time to read independently or participate in small group instruction. If a student is reading independently, they are often found stopping to jot down any ideas or questions they have about the book, which has helped with increasing their interest in reading. If a student is participating in small group instruction, my co-teacher and I are using the group's text to teach or discuss a particular element found in the books, such as symbolism or theme. We have used these books to elevate our students and improve their reading comprehension with appropriately leveled books.

Particularly, some of my students, Marlen, Angel and Nelson, were excited to work on improving themselves as readers with these new books. Marlen and Angel, who had read "The Last Wild," were excited to read its sequel "The Dark Wild" in order to find out how Kester's journey continued. Nelson, a lover of manga and anime, was excited to read the two books in the "My Hero Academia" series for independent reading. Even before the shipment of books, manga helped Nelson grow 100 points in his lexile score between this year and last year, indicating that this love for manga pushed his reading comprehension. I am excited to see the growth in reading level as a result of these new books!

Once again, I would like to thank you all for helping our classroom improve!”

With gratitude,

Mx. Perez Beltethon
