My students attend a large comprehensive high school in an urban district. The district-wide dropout rate is currently at 50%, and the rate for my school is even higher. The school has difficulty providing even basic supplies, let alone innovative technology. The school is currently undergoing a major reform to improve the quality of education provided to students. Much work is going into creating a sense of community in a large building, and individualizing education for students. My students are quick-- they enjoy things that are fast-paced and stimulating. Like all teenagers, they are obsessed with pop culture and the multitude of media that surrounds them on a daily basis. They are electronically savvy. They are also incredibly reluctant readers, writers and critical thinkers. Their confidence in their literacy skills is astonishingly low. The aim of my project is to capitalize on their strengths with digital literacy to encourage and improve their traditional literacy skills.
