  • I Spy Insects

    Funded Mar 1, 2022

The rain has finally stopped in Oakland and we are gearing up for a very colorful springtime! With spring comes our annual unit of study on insects and bugs. We do an inquiry on bugs to learn about body parts, colors, and methods of movement. We also love going on walks around the school to find insects and bugs in their natural habitat! With these materials, we can do an inquiry out in the natural environment and also hands-on in the classroom on a larger scale.

Thank you for your support with this project--this unit of study is always one of my favorite and I can't wait to get started next week!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Noelle

  • Special Education Preschool Class Needs Gross & Fine Motor Supplies!

    Funded Sep 2, 2021

Thank you for helping provide such fun motor materials for the classroom! We are working hard at strengthening the fine motor muscles in students' hands by playing with Thera-putty regularly, getting different kinds of vestibular input before work time by rocking in the boat and jumping on the trampoline during Circle. This is also creating opportunities for turn taking and deepening their understanding of stop/go and spatial directions like up/down and forward/backwards. We are using these materials every single day and the students are having so much fun. Thank you again!”

    Ms. Noelle

  • Cooking Up Something Good!

    Funded Mar 22, 2021

Year after year, making play dough in the classroom is my favorite activity. It is great for sensory exploration--we talk about soft flour, rough salt, hot water, watch the colors change. We also practice turn taking and counting while we all stir the contents in the bowl and roll the dice to see how many drops of food coloring to add.

When the play dough is complete, we roll it out to make letters, talk about big and small, and play with all the tools and cutters.

We have made play dough a couple of times this school year and added essential oils for smell, rock salt for texture and all of the students love the activity--before during and after.

    Thank you again!”

    Ms. Noelle

  • We Love Bugs!

    Funded Feb 25, 2021

Thank you for helping fund this project! It feels like it has been ages (in reality it's been 6 months!) since we started using these materials and students loved it. These materials will help teach lessons for years to come.

We had so much fun searching for different bugs in the bean table, discussing their wings, colors, legs, and eyes. We also did some wonderful The Very Hungry Caterpillar crafts that were inspired by the books funded in this project. Lastly, students enjoyed singing about all the different kids of bugs and searching for them around the classroom. Thank you again for your support!”

  • Reading With Our Hands

    Funded Feb 25, 2021

After participating in Distance Learning for 8 months, my students needed some new books to read! Reading a book is an integral part of my lessons for students and for students with visual impairments these books with tactile cues and sounds were immediately a success! New and exciting things to find on the page encourages the use of their hands which is a foundational skill for blind students as they move through their education--and pre-literacy skills! Thank you for making it possible to keep routine activities fresh and exciting.”

  • Bring the Books Home

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

The books supplied by your donations have been a hit during Distance Learning! My students enjoyed reading about The Mitten and interacting with the story boards I made with their parents. Students have also enjoyed going on bear hunts during small groups and singing along with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. I dropped all of the books off at student's houses right before Winter Break and I know that students, siblings, and parents have all enjoyed having extra reading material in the house, especially over the 2 week break from school. I will continue to use these books during the rest of the school year!”

  • Homemade Play Dough

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

Playing with play dough during small group instruction has been a ton of fun over the past few months of Distance Learning! We use it to form faces, letters, and practice the concepts of BIG and SMALL. We are also using the paint from this project regularly to create art projects related to our themes-- this week we are learning about things that go under the water. We painted blue water for our submarines! There are some leftover materials from the play dough project so the students will have another opportunity to make play dough in the classroom when we return--and each have their own supply to keep students healthy and safe.”

  • Circle Time Seats

    Funded May 6, 2020

Good news: this adaptive chair is a GREAT addition to my classroom. Bad news: I don't currently have any students to teach a classroom. One day...hopefully soon...a sweet little preschooler will get great benefit from sitting level with their peers in a supported and shiny new seat. One of the challenges of teaching students that use wheelchairs for positioning and mobility is that they are surrounded by a big metal frame that limits their access to peers and activities. Having another option for them during Circle and other social opportunities will strengthen their relationship with peers, provide them with opportunities to stretch those limbs, and get comfy while they learn.”

  • 1, 2, 3, Eyes On Me!

    Funded May 5, 2020

It's been a while since this project was completed and I've been holding out hope that by the time I said a propter Thank You we would be back in a classroom. Nevertheless, I am thankful for your support of my class. These items will be well used and loved when we eventually return to site, especially since it's been so long since students have been in a classroom and might need extra support to give their attention to their teachers.

Until then, thank you from afar and enjoy these photos of my all-packed-up-since-March classroom and your generous gift.”

  • At Home Sensory Kits

    Funded Aug 15, 2020

Sensory play has always been one of my favorite parts of teaching early intervention and thanks to you it still is, even in a virtual format. As you can see, students are playing in a mini bean-bin, getting messy with shaving cream, and I've even sent home some kinetic sand. Especially for my learners with visual impairments, this project has given opportunities for sensory exploration while learning to "look" for items with their hands, notice tactile indicators, and participate in routine instruction every day.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Noelle

Early intervention is, arguably, the most impactful part of development for students with disabilities. A safe space to imagine, structured social scenarios, and endless exploration are essential elements to an effective program. In my classroom, students are impacted with different orthopedic abilities, developmental delays, and visual impairments. Every student at our school received a free meal each day and students come from all over the city to receive their intervention. Giving the opportunities to explore their environment is critical to their learning. It is my goal as their teacher to give them the most opportunities to learn and grow in their world.
