  • A Thrilling Novel to Mesmerize 4th & 5th Graders

    Funded Apr 9, 2025

Stunned, absolutely stunned. I'm sitting having lunch in the library and reading emails and find out that this fabulous novel has been funded!!!

Thank you so much for making my Wednesday the best day of the week! I have a copy in my room and because of this email, decided to read the first chapter with them. They clamored for a second one but HAD to stop so they could choose their own books to read. It already hooked them!”

  • Don't Fold the Page, Bookmark It!

    Funded Nov 20, 2024

The glee emanating from the kids when they saw the variety of bookmarks was so much fun!

The older students got to choose from the drinks/ice cream bookmarks. As you can tell from their poses, they really enjoyed their choice. The 2 younger girls, well that's interesting. The one on the right is a bookworm and comes into the library every morning before school to sit and read or change her book. The one on the right is a first grader who "was" a behavior problem. She wanted to visit early too but I needed her behavior to change. I originally showed her the animal bookmarks and she really wanted them. So thank you for donating them because she's become so happy and pleasant in class. As you can see, she's collected a few already due to good behavior!

Parents have come in periodically to ask for their own bookmark too! What a hoot! A family that reads together, grows together! Can't ask for more these days, right? Next August/September, I'll put together a new list of cool bookmarks for a new year. Come back and look at my choices, please!”

  • Delving into a Great Novels!

    Funded Jul 1, 2023

The discussions that my 3rd and 4th graders are having about "Because of Winn-Dixie" and "The Graduation of Jake Moon" is unbelievable!

4th graders when they realized that Jake didn't stop his "friends" from making fun of an old man ( who turned out to be his grandfather), were appalled. They're also learning in-depth about the disease, Alzheimers.

3rd graders felt so badly that Opal's mother left her and her dad when she was little. They all came up w/their own reasons why it happened but they still thought she shouldn't have left w/o Opal.

This is exactly what I hoped would happen with great novels. Thank you for the assistance in purchasing our books!”

  • Don't Fold the Page, Book Mark It!!

    Funded Jan 11, 2023

I'll begin w/Willie's pure excitement of finding a book series that he adores! He had been reading picture books and has since jumped to chapter books that are "worthy" of a bookmark. So between his new-found love and bookmarks that have a scent, my job is made that much easier!

Kids are now collecting bookmarks and get all excited when I open a new pack. I do TRY to get them to reuse but we have created "Bookmark Aficionados". LOL

I so appreciate the donation for these bookmarks. I'm growing readers in my library and there's nothing like a great story to throw yourself into (or learn from) and continuing the excitement w/all kinds of lovely bookmarks to mark their place!”

  • "First Serve" Is In Your Hands! Let's Play Badminton!

    Funded Jul 15, 2021

What a Hit! You "served" an ace with your generous donations!

I cannot thank you enough for helping my school and students learn and develop skills from a sport that they normally do not play. The students had so many smiles and were extremely excited to learn a new skill and sport. They now are working on developing their hand-eye coordination, how to hold a racquet, serving and hitting, and most importantly sportsmanship. Badminton is such a great sport to learn. We (the kids and I) are so so appreciative!”

  • Mirror Mirror - I Can See Myself as a CHARACTER!

    Funded Jul 7, 2021

A wonderful gift you gave to my students. ALL of my kids from K to 5th grade have looked at and read all of the big books. The 5th graders are fighting over Class Act and New Kid (more of a graphic novel type of book). That's all the rage right now. So here and there a few books weren't available, so I went back on and ordered another one of each of the above mentioned books. Can't wait till they arrive and my 5th graders see them!

Thank you so much for the excitement you've brought my new library. A safe and happy 2022!”

  • Virtual Teaching Is an Exciting Reality!

    Funded Sep 19, 2020

Thanks upon thanks for your generosity. I arranged a pick up with families. Since I'm remote, I had a friend bring me to school with all of the goodies. I set up a table just outside the school door. Parents and kids came and were so excited (as I was just to see everyone!)

The phonics books are useful AND fun. Giving the kids an opportunity to cut and paste (which they really don't have a chance to do) the word endings onto the words is fun and educational...a win win situation!

The wipe off boards are absolutely amazing. I used it all the time to specifically show how a g, j, y and so on are below the writing line and the f, t, h, b's are taller than other letters. It can be tricky for a 6 year old and the wipe off markers with the eraser top makes it easier to use.

Unfortunately, when I take pictures on zoom of the students with their thank you's written on the boards, their first and last names are shown and I can't use them. But they are thrilled!!”

  • My First Year in 1st Grade After Teaching 24 Years!!!

    Funded Aug 30, 2020

This has been an exciting and different school year to be sure! Switching gears and teaching first graders has been a ball! They're so different from the older students I've been used to for so long.

The materials donated have helped enormously as you can imagine. Working remotely and having an easel to write on and have the students actually see what I was doing was a godsend. Having the "morning message" chart allowed me to learn what's important to teach (over and over, lol). Among the many parts to this, it has a weather wheel and the kids anxiously awaited to see whose turn it would be to run to the window (in their own apt, no less) and tell me where to spin the weather wheel. It was so funny to me how excited they were to do it every day! The feelings journal was good for them because it allowed them space for their handwriting practice and let me know how they felt about specific subjects and whatever was on their mind.

Thank you for your generosity and for choosing my proposal this school year!”

  • Stand and Swing to My Geography/History Lessons!

    Funded Jan 20, 2020

Honestly, I just don't know who loves this standing desk more, me or the kids. I guess it's a tie.

I had one of my 5th graders come up to build it. He's a natural Ikea furniture builder, if you know what I mean. He was thrilled. We grabbed a strong 3rd grader to assist. Besides building, I knew they would also be the ones to use in their respective classes, so it was a win-win situation for me.

Within each class (I have 15 classes) there are several kids with the needs to use it, so I do try to alternate the time/days for each. My greatest wish would to have a classroom full of these, what a difference it would make...but that's for another time..

Alas because of Covid-19, we're not there to take advantage of the desk, but rest assured, next year we will enjoy it tremendously.”

  • 33 Chairs Always Moving--Oy the Noise!

    Funded Jun 19, 2018

First I must explain the first 2 photos of my "crew". These are my rambunctious 4th graders (all in one classroom) who altogether have way more than a dozen suspensions, mostly for fighting (each other). I even taught the mother of one of the boys about 19 years ago. I took it upon myself to have them team up and put together all the gliders on 33 chairs. Originally, they decided to each have their own chairs to work on. I nixed that idea and made each kid take a leg of a chair. They argued a lot but no fights (more gray hair for me tho) and tried to get them working together. Wound up being fun. I wanted one picture of them, but they insisted I get in one with them.

Now onto the gliders...all kids love them, but the little ones are thrilled. They're excited to see that the chair moves in and out so readily! Their thank you letters are quite funny. Many state now Ms. M. won't go crazy w/the noise (but I expect they like it too). Thank you SOOOOOO much!”

After having my own class of 5th graders for 15 years, I now teach my favorite subject, Social Studies to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th AND 6th graders! I'm really excited to reach and teach about 400 exuberant students each year. However they do come from difficult circumstances. We are an NYC (inner-city) public school. We're across the street from the housing project where most of my kids live. In this economy, extra money for the "extras" in education are difficult to come by. "Extras" are schoolwork magazines, field trips, and several notebooks throughout the year. Our school even provides breakfast (during the summer too) and lunches. If we do get to go on a trip, students usually get a school lunch, instead of bringing a lunch from home. The "extras" that I try to attain for my students I feel aren't extras, they are NECESSITIES to make a well-rounded student.
