  • "We Do Language": Help Students See the Power of Poetry

    Funded Nov 15, 2016

Thank you so much for your support of our Collegiate poets! I cannot wait to have Southern Word visit our students for the first week of next semester and expose students to the healing, empowering, inspiring magic of finding your voice and telling your story via poetry. Please keep an eye out for student work moving forward- you've made it possible!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Morrow

  • Help Ms. M's Class Grow Two Years in Reading!

    Funded Feb 10, 2014

Thank you for your help in getting my classroom's project funded! Having access to great, engaging literature is a privilege you've now given my students the chance to enjoy. Reading opens up countless pathways of opportunity, and your donations have the potential to help transform my students' life trajectories. Stronger readers have stronger chances of getting better jobs and getting into better colleges. Providing my students with the resources they need to be successful today helps them build the toolkit they will need to be successful in the future.

I look forward to updating each of you on the exciting progress my students make as a result of their exposure to this novel! I promise that my students and I will make the most of our time with this text, and will work hard to reach our goal of 2 years growth!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Morrow

After a semester, my students have grown 1.5 years in reading. While we did not meet our goal, students are inspired by their personal growth and even more committed to their growth goals in the new semester. One student, we'll call her A, grew from a 6th grade reading level to a level indicated as PHS, or Post High School. In a reflection of her accomplishment, A writes: "before this semester, I knew I was going to work really hard to graduate high school so that I could make my parents proud. Now, Ms. Morrow told me that I am reading on a college level, which makes me think that I could actually go to college. Neither of my parents went to college, so I know they would be very proud to have a daughter achieve that success!" Because many of my students came from low-income and Title I middle schools with limited resources, they did not have access to the wealth of novels and variety of texts many of their peers at wealthier schools were able to enjoy.
