Help Students Build Their Body Of Knowledge With Body Books!
Funded Dec 4, 2014Thank you again for helping to bring body books - gross and otherwise - to our libraries!
As expected, the gross ones are incredibly popular; as soon as I put a returned one on display, it's checked out again. The kids LOVE facts, and they love to share them with me, such as how fast a sneeze comes out (100 miles an hour) and how scabs are formed. They also love to share disgusting pictures of body parts and diseases. But hey, it's science!
Your donations have tricked my students into learning. Hooray!”

We Need a Clue: Help Bring Mysteries to Our Libraries
Funded Nov 5, 2014Thank you for bringing a great collection of mysteries for all different grade levels to our libraries!
Some of the older kids have become hooked on the Silver Jaguar Society, All the Wrong Questions, and Sammy Keyes series; they've been ordering the volumes we don't have from other schools and getting their friends to read them as well.
And I had so much fun reading the Richard Scarry mysteries to first and second graders; they were able to get clues from the pictures and tell me who they thought the culprit was.
Your support makes it possible for me to introduce my kids to books we just don't have money in the school budget to buy ... thank you for helping to build our collection and keep the students excited about reading!”

Help Us Slooooooowly Build Our Sloth Collection
Funded Aug 29, 2014Thank you so much for your donations to our sloth book collections! The second graders, with whom I did the fiction v. nonfiction lesson last year, were so excited to see that we have our own copies of the books now. Somehow they managed open every informational text directly to the page about sloths coming down from their trees once a week to poop. I am sure that fact will stick with this year's first graders when we do our lesson!
FYI, you can enjoy Black Francis/Frank Black's "Lost Sloth" redialed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdt9OO-zbkE
Thanks again for your support!”

When I Grow Up ... Help Inspire Students with Biographies
Funded Aug 22, 2014Thank you so much for bringing shiny new picture book biographies to our library!
While introducing the third graders to the biography section last week, I asked who they'd like to learn about. One student said, "Albert Einstein," and I was able to hand him "On a Beam of Light." Then I went through the pile of DonorsChoose books, describing the accomplishments of their subjects and showing some of the pictures; hands shot up after I was done with each one, with kids doing "Rock, Paper, Scissors" to decide who got to take the book home this time. Fannie Farmer and Julia Child were especially popular with the students who love to check out cookbooks.
The classroom teacher and I are happy that the kids have such interesting people to read about and to choose from when they do their biography projects in a couple of months. Thank you for enriching our students' lives as they read about lives that have made a difference.”

Help Us Medal: 2014 ALA Award Winners Needed
Funded May 2, 2014Again, thank you so much for your incredible generosity.
Now that school is back in session, I've been able to booktalk the ALA winners on checkout days. The older kids have actually been really interested in some of the books aimed at younger kids - Mr. Wuffles, Nino, and DJ Kool Herc have been very popular. Most of the Newberys have also been checked out - I taught the students about blurbs, and recommendations from authors they already like have carried a lot of weight.
It's so awesome to be able to offer my students all of the award-winning books this year, rather than having to pick and choose because of district budget constraints.
Thank you thank you!!!!”

Help My Kids Get the Vote - We Need RICBA Books!
Funded Apr 3, 2014Thank you so much for making it possible for my students to participate in the 2015 Rhode Island Children's Book Award voting process!
The kids previewed the entire lot with an annotated list, circling the ones they wanted to read. True to their love of all things spooky, most of them want to get their hands on "Legend of the Ghost Dog" - it has a long waiting list at both schools. In the meantime, nearly every other title had already been checked out and read/reviewed by at least one student before the school year ended - "Doll Bones" was deemed "awesome," and "Nelson Mandela" moved a girl to tears.
Having these books in the libraries so early in the RICBA cycle means that more kids have more time to read more of the nominees - I'm looking forward to having students booktalk their favorites in the fall, and having lots more qualified voters in February. We wouldn't have this opportunity without your donation!”

Bring Elephant & Piggie to Our School Library!
Funded Feb 28, 2014Elephant & Piggie were, as expected, a hit! I actually got a request from a third-grader for one of the titles before I had even opened the box, and was so happy to be able to say "Yes, we do have that!" Her classmates fell upon the books immediately (see photos).
A few weeks later, I was able to introduce the first-graders to the characters - we spent an entire lesson reading several of the books out loud (with a second reading of "We Are in a Book!" as requested by Elephant & Piggie themselves, and a dance party thrown in - http://www.pigeonpresents.com/DanceGame/).
The following week was checkout, and the bin was empty within minutes.
The books are so fun, the students are so excited to be able to read them on their own, and I am so grateful that you all gave us the opportunity to add to our collection. THANK YOU!!!!!”
