  • Next! Bring New Series Titles to Our Libraries

    Funded Mar 16, 2021

This project has led to so many checkouts, thank you!

    - The "My Life" series has piqued the interest of 5th grade.

    - A student loved "Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls" so much, she's doing a booktalk on it.

    - The Dog Man books are snatched up as soon as they are returned.

    - Two girls have decided to read the entire "Upside Down Magic" series together.

    - The Bad Guys have tons of holds on them.

To be able to hand kids the next book in a series and see them clap their hands, jump up and down, or sing a little song is one of my favorite parts of my job. Thanks for making it possible.”

  • For Those About to Mock: Help Us Read Potential Caldecotts

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

First and second graders had another successful Mock Caldecott, with lots of good discussion and lobbying for favorites. In the end, the same book won at both schools - "Snail Crossing" by Corey R. Tabor. Here are some of their reasons why:

    It was sweet and funny.

The snail is very slow. He thinks he's going to the food, but he went in a circle.

I like when the snail thought he scared the bird away, but the car did.

Because the snail helps the ants.

The ants went in the snail shell and had a tea party.

Because it is so cute to me.

The ants were nice enough to bring the lettuce that the snail was trying to get.

    It is silly.

It teaches you to be kind.

We recommend that you read it too!”

  • Help My Kids Get the Vote With RICBA Books!

    Funded Jun 18, 2020

Thanks again for bringing the RICBA books to our libraries. I'm hoping to have all of my students in grades 3-5 qualified to vote this year, by reading three of the short books on the list out loud during class.

One of them is "Gross as a Snot Otter," which they either love or hate. Either way, we have all learned lots of gross facts. Did you know that the Spanish Ribbed Newt can make its ribs go outside of its body, picking up toxins on the skin on the way, and poisoning predators? Amazing.

The kids are also reading the chapter books on their own. In fact, they are all checked out and have long hold lists. Two favorites are "Awesome Dog 5000" (popular enough that I bought the sequel as well) and "One-Third Nerd" (which one third-grade class voted to have their teacher read out loud to them.

Your generosity has helped my students get excited about information and stories. Have a wonderful 2021!”

  • Help My Kids Get the Vote With RICBA Books!

    Funded May 6, 2020

Thanks again for your generosity! It being 2020, this particular project had a twisty way of coming to fruition.

I misunderstood the delivery options during COVID times and thought the books could go to any address in the district and had a parent lined up to receive the shipment. But it had to be a school-related address, and buildings were closed, so the project had to go on hold until we returned in the fall.

By that time, I had been able to get multiple copies of many of the RICBA titles through a state grant and also had a better of idea of which ones my students wanted to read. So when this project popped back up, I ended up splitting it between popular RICBA books and Mock Caldecott books to use later in the school year. I've attached photos of some of the latter group so you can see what you helped to purchase.

While the Mock Caldecotts haven't circulated yet, since I am currently reading them to grades 1 and 2 leading up to a vote, I'm happy to report that all of the RICBA books have been checked out - some multiple times. One library is being used as a teacher's room, and the other as a first-grade classroom, but I lug bags and boxes of books around school to do checkout in the classrooms. Thanks to you, we have some very popular new books with hold lists.

Thank you again for contributing to a bright spot in 2020, and have a very happy new year!”

  • Help Us Medal: 2020 ALA Award Winners Needed

    Funded Mar 6, 2020

Thank you so much for your generosity! I'm especially excited to share the latest Geisel winners with my kindergartners - the Smell My Foot! book was one of my favorite reads last year. So ridiculous. They are going to love it.

I appreciate your assistance in getting new books into my students' hands.”

  • When I Grow Up ... Help Inspire Students with Biographies

    Funded Mar 6, 2020

Thank you for bringing these new biographies to our libraries! I was just fielding wax museum requests yesterday, and look forward to letting the students know that they'll be able to read about such interesting people soon.

I appreciate your support of improving our collections and helping kids learn more about the world.”

  • Help Students Learn Weird (But True) Facts!

    Funded Nov 4, 2019

Thank you so much for your generous funding of this entire "Weird But True" project. The books are a huge hit, especially with 4th grade at one school and 3rd grade at the other. In fact, the other grades haven't even really had a chance to check out the books because they are snatched off the return cart as soon as students place them down.

More than half of the students in these classes are using the books as a source for sharing facts with the class. We're learning all sorts of weird things, like "The average life span of an NBA basketball is about 10,000 bounces" and "A hotel straddling the border of France and Switzerland lets you sleep with your head in one country and your feet in the other."

Thanks again for supporting my students' love of strange information. I haven't seen the kids this excited about a set of books in a long time.”

  • Help Get My Kids Excited for a Festival of Books

    Funded Oct 8, 2019

Thank you so much for expanding our library collections to include books by the authors and illustrators who attended the fall festival in Providence! It is such a treat for the students to be introduced to new titles and then have the opportunity to be literally introduced to the creators.

I saw students who were thrilled to meet Megan McDonald of the Judy Moody series (and we learned from her presentation that she bases a lot of her plot points on experiences from her childhood as the youngest of five sisters); Dan Santat of a ton of picture books and graphic novels (and whose presentation was hilarious ... listening to him talk about goat eyes was hysterical); and James Dean of Pete the Cat (I missed his presentation because I was waiting in line to get books signed by other people).

Thanks again for helping to make these connections between my students and authors and illustrators.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Moore

  • Help My Kids Get the Vote With RICBA Books!

    Funded Jul 15, 2019

Thank you for bringing the Rhode Island Children's Book Award (RICBA) books to our libraries.

One fifth grader has already read them all! She is the first member of our Rooster Games team; each elementary school in our district competes in a citywide trivia night in an effort to bring home the trophy. This year's third graders are excited to participate in the Rooster Games for the first time.

I should have taken a picture of all the books when they came in, because ever since I processed them and put them on display, our RICBA shelves have been pretty empty because the books are all out. "Nightbooks" and "The Peculiar Incident on Shady Street" and "Bob" are the most popular books; they each have nearly a dozen holds on them.

Thanks again for feeding my students' enthusiasm for books.”

    Funded Dec 3, 2019

Wow! What a great Giving Tuesday! A 2-hour delay and a fully funded project!

Thank you so much for your generosity. I'm so excited that we'll have our own copies of these readalouds as soon as we start the Mock Caldecott unit. I look forward to checking them out to the students.”
