  • Next! Bring Popular Graphic Novel Series Titles to Our Libraries

    Funded May 9, 2023

I took the photos back in May and checked all the books out to the kids during the last month of circulation, and forgot to let you know!

Judd, I wish that I were allowed to show kids' faces in these photos, because the reluctant reader who discovered Hilo and became obsessed - his jaw literally dropped and he jumped up and down when I told him that you had bought more books in the series for him to read. And then all of his friends wanted to read them too.

Your support means so much! Thank you for bringing books - and excitement - to my libraries!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Moore

  • Next! Bring Popular/New Graphic Novel Series Titles to Our Libraries

    Funded Jan 16, 2023

Well, I should have taken photos of the books before I let the students know they had arrived ... they have all been checked out constantly since I put bar codes on them.

The kids were thrilled to have more Dog Man books, and just yesterday as several 2nd graders returned some, their classmates immediately grabbed the books from the return cart to take them back out.

Wings of Fire has exploded in popularity now that graphic novel editions exist, and are also grabbed off the return cart as soon as students place them there.

And, of course, students who have been reading Babysitter's Club and Wimpy Kid books in order can now be up-to-date on the entire series.

Thank you for bringing these titles to my libraries. The kids and I appreciate it!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Moore

  • Help Us Medal: 2022 ALA Award Winners Needed

    Funded Mar 1, 2022

Thanks for bringing award-winning books to our libraries!

The Geisels - named for Dr. Seuss whose real name was Theodore Geisel - were a huge hit. The kids laughed out loud at "Nothing Fits a Dinosaur" and "Fox at Night," which has a text pattern they were able to learn quickly.

The nonfiction found readers as well. "The Great Stink" is about poop, so, you know ... On a very different plane, "The Genius Under the Table" illustrated the traumas of growing up under Communism in Russia, and "Unspeakable" illustrated the trauma of the attack on Black Wall Street (and ended up on the 2023 Rhode Island Children's Book Award nominee list).

Thank you so much for adding to our collections.”

  • Bounce Some Basketball Books into Our Libraries!

    Funded Aug 9, 2022

Thank you so much for the basketball books! The kids are thrilled to have new material to read that includes information from this decade and players that they currently watch on TV. As predicted, there are multiple holds on each title.

It is tough to keep up with all of my students' interests when my small budget is spent in June. I so appreciate your support throughout the school year so that I can add to our collection when the kids ask for books about specific topics. Have a wonderful 2023!”

  • Next! Bring New Series Titles to Our Libraries

    Funded Nov 30, 2021

Thank you so much for bringing these new books into our libraries! They have been so popular, I only have a couple of photos because I forgot to take more when the books came in ... they've pretty much all been checked out since I opened the boxes.

Second grade is obsessed with Owl Diaries, several first graders have discovered Eerie Elementary, and EVERYONE loves the Baby Sitters Club! In fact, I have kids in 3rd, 4th, and 5th do book talks for their class, and every classroom has had someone promote the BSC.

I so appreciate your generosity! Thank you!”

  • For Those About to Mock: Help Us Read Potential Caldecotts

    Funded Oct 29, 2021

Thank you so much for making our tenth annual Mock Caldecott possible! The kids loved *most* of the books, and two came out on top:

Garden City kids chose "Off-Limits" by Helen Yoon as their winner. The main character has been told to stay out of her dad's home office. She goes in to just take one tiny piece of tape, and the next think you know, she has trashed / decorated the entire room with office supplies. She slinks back to her room and discovers that her dad has made a mess playing with all of her toys!

Oak Lawn students gave the most votes to "The Rock from the Sky" by Jon Klassen. In five mini-chapters, the main setting never really changes much, but through the character's facial expressions and dialogue (the entire book is dialogue), we experience action, drama, and pure silliness.

I'm attaching photos of some of their ballots so you can see their reasons for the students' choices as well as their renditions of their favorite illustrations.

Thanks again for bringing new favorites to our libraries.”

  • Next! Bring New Series Titles to our Libraries

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

Thank you so much for bringing these new books into our libraries! They have been so popular, I only have a couple of photos because I forgot to take more when the books came in ... they've pretty much all been checked out since I opened the boxes.

Fourth grade is OBSESSED with the Wings of Fire graphic novels, and third grade has discovered them as well. Second grade LOVES the Bad Guys (as do I), and often bargain with each other as to who will check out which installment (it pains many of them to go out of order).

I didn't even know that Big Nate was getting made into a TV show ... interest in that series has definitely grown in the past few months, and I love that I have brand new copies to share.

I so appreciate your generosity! Thank you!”

  • When I Grow Up ... Help Inspire Students with Biographies

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

Thank you for helping us stock up on "Who Was" titles and other books about famous (and not so famous) people for students to learn about. I've been trying to up the percentage of current nonfiction in my collections, and these additions are perfect.

One fourth grader did a book talk on the Abigail Adams biography, and two fifth graders were able to use information from the George Washington Carver and Katherine Johnson books for their life mobile projects last month.

    I so appreciate your support!”

  • Help My Kids Get the Vote With RICBA Books!

    Funded May 22, 2021

Thank you so much for giving us the Children's Book Award nominees so that kids could read them in preparation to vote next month.

I love that several students have chosen titles from the list to promote through the book talks I have them do. "From the Desk of Zoe Washington," "Anti/Hero," "Midnight at the Barclay Hotel," "Willa and the Whale," "Measuring Up," and "The Lonely Heart of Maybelle Lane" have all found champions.

In addition, so far I have read "Fauja Singh Keeps Going" and "The Oldest Student" to all of the classes in grades 3-5. Students are inspired by the stories of these determined people who kept going against the odds.

Thank YOU for helping our book collections to keep going!”

  • Help Us Medal: 2021 ALA Award Winners Needed

    Funded Mar 16, 2021

Thank you so much for bringing this collection of award-winning books to our libraries. They include picture books, early readers, nonfiction, and novels. The content ranges from silly (a tiger afraid of worms in "What About Worms!?") to serious (a character's father losing his memory due to CTE in "Before the Ever After").

Actually, several are pretty serious, including immigration issues addressed in "Efren Divided" and African refugee camps in "When Stars Are Scattered." I appreciate the opportunity for my students to learn about the world around them via fiction and graphic novels.

Thanks again for adding to my students' education.”
