Funded Dec 13, 2021We have learned so much from the books we received. Every morning, from Monday - Thursday, we start our day with at least 15 minutes of independent reading. Friday's are our read aloud days in which students vote on a book and we read together before starting our discussion. One of the books we received was Hair Love by Matthew Cherry. My students come to school everyday with different hairstyles from locs to braids, so I thought it would be the perfect book for us. As we were reading, students shared their observations about the characters. I heard students say "He has hair like me!" or "I watch hair videos too!". They were making so many connections to the characters and it was in that moment I realized the power of representation. After reading, we watch the Oscar-winning Hair Love short-film. Students were asked to compare and contrast the book with the film (common core standard RL.3.9). By the end of the lesson, there was a long waitlist for the book to be checked out of the library for independent reading. Thank you for making this possible with your donations.”
With gratitude,
