  • Reading is Fundamental: When Characters Look Like US

    Funded Dec 13, 2021

We have learned so much from the books we received. Every morning, from Monday - Thursday, we start our day with at least 15 minutes of independent reading. Friday's are our read aloud days in which students vote on a book and we read together before starting our discussion. One of the books we received was Hair Love by Matthew Cherry. My students come to school everyday with different hairstyles from locs to braids, so I thought it would be the perfect book for us. As we were reading, students shared their observations about the characters. I heard students say "He has hair like me!" or "I watch hair videos too!". They were making so many connections to the characters and it was in that moment I realized the power of representation. After reading, we watch the Oscar-winning Hair Love short-film. Students were asked to compare and contrast the book with the film (common core standard RL.3.9). By the end of the lesson, there was a long waitlist for the book to be checked out of the library for independent reading. Thank you for making this possible with your donations.”

    With gratitude,

These books would help widen my students vocabulary and experiences. My students enjoy learning and reading in general, but I notice a spark within them when we learn about black characters like Bill Pickett, who is one of most famous black cowboys. When we learned about the Chinese culture that lead to the Legend of Mulan, there were mini activist being born saying things like “That’s not fair. Why would they treat her like that, just because she’s a girl”. These additions to our classroom will help build experiences for my students about different cultures while also getting them excited about the places they can go with just reading stories.
