Funded Sep 15, 2018Thank you so much for funding such a fun project! The students really enjoyed making their homemade compasses. In science class, we spent some time exploring how a compass works. Students learned that a compass is a tiny magnet that pivots easily and behaves in a predictable manner because of the Earth's magnetic field. Students were intrigued to learn to the difference between Geographic North and Magnetic North, and that the Earth's magnetic field is actually flipped. After spending some time exploring compasses and magnetism, students were really excited to learn that they were going to build their own compasses and they responded with an enthusiastic, 'yay!' This project created several enduring understandings for students. Students now know a compass is a small magnet, all magnets have two poles, unlike things attract and like things repel, the difference between geographic north and magnetic north, as well household objects that can turn into temporary magnets or ferromagnets. Once again, thank you for your donation and making this project possible! The students loved it!”
With gratitude,
