  • Love of Reading Week! Pt. 2

    Funded Jan 26, 2022

I want to begin by thanking you all for your generosity and support.this unit has been all about growing in consciousness. becoming aware of what is happening around us, why it is happening, and how we can do something about it. it was within these conversations that this idea came to life. my students recognized that:

Many of my students peers (including themselves) do not read "for fun". We brainstormed many of the "whys" behind the what and found the following factors- books aren't accessible to their families, the books that ARE accessible are not 'interesting' or culturally responsive, and there isn't enough incentive to push them to read. I asked students HOW we can address this and take "positive action". Together we co-created a campus book drive and book giveaway.

As an educator, a mentor, and a product of this school and community, I felt an extra responsibility to youth in my community. That is why I felt the need to take this lesson beyond the classroom. There are certain lessons that can only be taught with action. If we are teaching young people that they have the power to change the world- we must provide them with tangible proof. That is what this Book Drive and projects meant to me. It's my will turned positive action. I want to thank everyone who has shown their support. it is beautiful to know we have such an amazing community.”

    With gratitude,

  • Culturally Responsive Literature in the Classroom!

    Funded Nov 18, 2021

Thanks to your donations and support we were able to provide each student with their own copy of Mexican Whiteboy by Matt de la Pena. We have only been reading the book for a couple of weeks and already I can see how much the students love it. They are engaged and excited to explore the pages of this story. It is validating for them to read stories that resonate with their lived experiences. Prioritizing culturally responsive literature in the classroom, makes a world of a difference. Thank you for being part of our efforts and story.”

  • One Book for Every Student! Needed: Class Set of 'Night'

    Funded Aug 19, 2021

During these difficult and unpredictable times, we have leaned on our community more than ever. Your generosity has been refreshing and validating during this time. Thanks to your generosity, students have been able to explore books in new capacities. Night by Elie Wiesel is a critical piece of literature within our classroom. It has taught us new levels of compassion and empathy. All while teaching us about the power of our voice and story. Students were able to experience this compelling story in new forms, since each of them got their own copy to take home. Our lessons became more engaging and it transformed our learning. Thank you for thinking of us and send love our way. Your impact is felt everyday.”

  • Exploring the World of Books in Comfort and Style

    Funded Jul 20, 2021

First, thank you for your contribution to our learning environment. The classroom library has received such a positive and loving response from the students. The library was designed to promote engagement and a curiosity for reading/writing. I am happy to report that library has done that and more. Our students have fallen in love with the library and have described it as welcoming. The students were able to decorate the library and create a space designed for and by them. I am profoundly grateful for what you have done for our classroom. The impact you have made in our classroom is felt and it will not be forgotten. Thank you!”

    Funded Jul 20, 2021

Thanks to your generous donations our classroom has become a space that cultivates a love for reading. Your donations have made it possible to display and share dozens of diverse titles. Our students have been able to find a book that they resonate and actively engage with. The titles in our library have inspired a new generation of readers and writers- who now believe they too can become authors one day. It has been inspiring to witness how students respond to the works of authors from similar walks of life. Thank you for your impact, your generosity, and your dedication to public education. My students are a resilient group of young people. They are strong advocates and facilitators of their learning. Together we are cultivating an equitable learning environment where everyone is a teacher, and everyone is learner. The students long to have books that resonate with their realities. They are curious, empathic and knowledgeable of diverse cultures. They actively seek to read about others and find parallels in their experiences. They have a profound understanding of the power of books. My students understand that a book can serve as a bridge between worlds.
