Multiplication Madness
Funded Nov 29, 2022The dominoes are the biggest hit! Thank you so much for all of these resources. At the end of the day, students love to challenge me to a game of multiplication dominoes. When I told them I'd make them available at recess as well, they said, "Yessss!". How exciting that the fifth graders want to work on multiplication not as an assignment, but during their free time?! The multiplication flashcards will be put to good use as we team up with our third grade buddy class! Thank you once again for helping to make learning fun!”

Funded Nov 29, 2022Thank you for the I Survived graphic novels. When the box arrived and I told the class we were the recipients of some very generous people out there, their eyes lit up about what would be inside. Our few copies of these popular graphic novels are in hot demand, so getting this fresh shipment with new titles was an exciting moment of our day. I selected students by lottery to be the first to crack open the fresh new ones. One student crossed their fingers and when her name was called, she exclaimed, "This is the one I've been waiting for!" Thank you once again for keeping the love of reading alive!”

Funded May 4, 2022I stacked the newly received books on the corner of my desk and it didn't take long for students to notice them. Their eyes got wide and their curiosity grew. The next thing I knew, a few girls were eagerly asking "Can I borrow that one?". The graphic novels were scooped up and devoured in an instant. These new texts will serve two main purposes. First, getting my students to actively read and enjoy reading which has been a major goal this year. The graphic novels are the "hook" to get them into reading lately. Second, many of the selections include historical events and people which will be a great source of supplemental resources for lessons.”

Funded Oct 21, 2021Thank you for providing high interest chapter books for my 5th grade students. After 2 years of disrupted classroom learning, creating an independent reading routine has been a major goal, but also a struggle. Students were reluctant to read and also lacked focus and motivation. The graphic novels you donated to our room have been just what was needed.
Students have at least 20 minutes every day to read. When I introduced these new books as options, their eyes lit up and all their hands shot into the air wanting to be the first to scoop them up. As soon as someone finishes a book, I have students stampeding over to me to be able to get the book next. Their enthusiasm is contagious and other students who had no interest in these books now want them, too.
Graphic novels of both nonfiction and fiction genres are strengthening their comprehension and inference skills. Thank you so much for being part of our reading journey.”

Funded Sep 18, 2021It was a long week of school that ended with a dark rainy Friday. Students weren't happy with the indoor recess announcement until they saw me head over to the bookshelves. I explained to them how generous people donated all kinds of great new games for them to play with their classmates. We discussed how playing games helps us work on cooperation, fairness and forming connections with peers. They quickly scooped up the Uno cards, Battleship and Connect Four games and eagerly invited classmates to play. We can't thank you enough for the wonderful games!”

Funded May 26, 2021Thank you for the generous donation of floor cushions and Hatchet chapter books. The students are adjusting to full day academic demands and having the opportunity to use the cushions for a workspace has been an incredible addition to our days. The students are eagerly awaiting to crack open the chapter books and dig in to the great storyline. This whole class reading of Hatchet will bring students love of reading back! We appreciate all that you have done to make this happen. The smiles on their faces say it all!”

Funded Apr 10, 2021My students have returned to in person learning full time, but we heavily rely on technology throughout our day. Our math program uses an online platform to guide students through lessons specifically geared toward their needs. Many of the tasks involve drag and drop or click and answer. A finicky touch pad on their chromebooks has led many to struggle with their work.
This past Friday, I started the day by telling them about a wonderful surprise. I explained what Donors Choose was all about and how a very generous person decided to help us out! Their eyes lit up as I passed out mouse pads and mice for all!
My students and I are forever grateful for these donations. Thank you again.”

Windows and Mirrors
Funded Jul 22, 2020Remote Learning has added a tremendous learning curve to our school year. Keeping students engaged in lessons has never been more difficult. The books that you generously donated to my fifth grade class has helped keep learning alive... even from a distance.
Every year, my class motto is "Be the Change You Wish to See in the World". We kickstarted our year by reading Malala's Magic Pencil and had many deep conversations about the impact this young girl has had on our world. Students were inspired to think of their passions and what changes they want to see in our world. Peace and Equality were top issues.
The variety of books that students will be able to read and discuss as we continue learning remotely for the foreseeable future will keep my students connected and thinking deeply about diversity and inclusivity. I thank you for making this happen for our class during such a tumultuous time in history.”

Ms. Lunney
Work Hard Play Hard
Funded May 3, 2019As the donation boxes arrived, I stacked them in the back of our classroom. Students were in the midst of standardized testing. Long days requiring sustained mental effort were really bogging them down. My fifth graders were in need of some movement and a dose of fresh air. I might have been more excited than they were as I gathered them around to tell them the story of this wonderful website called Donors Choose and all the kind-hearted people in the world who want to help schools and students. The students eyes lit up and a cheer of "Yay!" echoed around the room as I showed them all the new recess equipment we were given!
On the next bright, sunny, warm afternoon ( after enduring a very rainy spring with many indoor recess days), we headed outside with all our new activities. " I want to be on your team for badminton!" " I've never played horseshoes. I want to learn!" These are just a sample of the things overheard. As the students tried out all the new stuff, I noticed them pairing up and including others into games. Some students who normally would never "hang out" together at recess were now interacting, learning new games and rules, and connecting with new friends. We are beyond thankful for this donation! Words can't express it, so I hope the pictures let you know how how much we appreciate what you have done!”

Funded Mar 8, 2018Thank you for the generous donation of books. These new history texts helped my 5th graders research Viking explorers, American colonists, and the events of the famous Boston Tea Party. This book series is an all time favorite and we usually have to share just one copy. Having enough of these books for students to partner - read has increased their effort, engagement, and motivation. Students used these books to compare colonies, research the reputation of Viking explorers and what they were actually like, and get all kinds of great "trivia" about the Boston Tea Party. When I opened the delivered box, the students were so surprised and thankful to hear that a wonderful person out there in the world bought these books for our classroom. "Wow!" "Cool!" "Can I read that one first?" were a few of the comments you could hear throughout the room. I hope the donor knows how much we truly appreciate this act of generosity.”

Ms. Lunney
