Science Notebooks For Budding Scientists
Funded Jun 15, 2010Wow! I'm humbled by your commitment to my students. I look forward to using the resources you've provided with this incoming class of fourth graders. They will now all have a place to hypothesize, record observations, and reflect on our experiments. They'll be able to take notes on our educational videos and diagram important concepts.
Your donation makes all of the hard work I have put into place worth it! In the last couple of months, I have spent hours gathering and organizing handouts, lab sheets, and experiments that meet our curriculum expectations. These journals, clipboards, and the pencil sharpener now make my plan complete.
Thank you so very much.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Roberts
Color Me Proficient
Funded Feb 21, 2010Wow! What a great supply of resources you have made possible for us to use. I have seen kids editing sentences from the overhead projector practicing their composition skills. We have used the dry erase markers to solve challenging math problems on the computer screen. My students have diagrammed and labeled plant and animal cells. Later wrote paragraphs telling about the similarities and differences. And, we've had a great time working with the water colors on self portraits.
By integrating art into my curriculum, I am able to hold the interest of my students while requiring them to work at higher levels of understanding. For instance, they loved drawing the plant and animal cells. Then, we labeled our diagrams. Having a model in front of each student allowed us to discuss in detail how the cells are the same and how they are different. Composing a paragraph about their very own model held a lot of meaning for them. This kind of work makes children think and analyze at the highest levels of learning.
Thank you so much for giving me the tools to push my kids to the next level!”

Picture My World!
Funded May 29, 2009Wow! My students have been so excited to get to put these cameras into use. Most of them had never taken pictures on their own before because of lack of access to the technology or parental concern over breakage. Their eyes lit up when I first passed them around and told them to "mess around" looking through the screen on the back. They couldn't believe that's what I'd tell them to do.
Since that first day we have taken portraits of one another, documented plants and growth in the outdoor classroom, and photographed projects. One of the pictures I included here has products that originated from digital photos. We took lots of pictures of one another, cropped our favorite one on the computer, and traced the outline. From there, we produced copies and applied different art techniques to them. In the end, we'll combine the art processes to produce a gallery showing for our parents.
Our class has brainstormed ways to use the cameras, and the kids are already getting adept at using the cameras and loading them onto the computer. We have set a goal of producing a digital portfolio this year for each kid.
Thank you so very much for giving me the chance to extend the learning within my classroom! It has really sparked joy and fun with my students.”

Mrs. Roberts
