  • Budding Bronx Mathematicians Need a Projector

    Funded Sep 15, 2018

I cannot express how thankful I am for your generosity. The addition of a projector to the classroom will help my coteacher and l provide additional support to students and provide more opportunities to check in one-on-one with students to assess their learning. My students are eager for the arrival of this new technology. Thank you all again for making this possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lomurno

  • From Desks to Ships

    Funded Mar 5, 2017

Thank you all for your generous donations, which allowed my students to have the unique experience of sailing around the NYC harbor. My students had an amazing time on the Pioneer, a sailboat that is over one hundred years old and is itself a piece of New York history. While on the trip, my students got to pull the ropes to raise the sails, hold and learn about live clams, look at water samples, and learn how to use a compass and read a map, just like the original sailors of the Pioneer did.

One highlight of the trip for my students was raising the sails on the ship. My students got to learn the real terminology that sailors use and call back and forth with the captain of the ship. They learned about the different parts of the ship and how they work. Back in the classroom, my students were able to discuss what they saw and experienced while sailing. My students reflected on what they learned, which included discussing which buildings surrounding the harbor had been there when the ship originally sailed.

The students of Mott Hall III and I are so grateful that you have helped give us this wonderful experience!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lomurno

Each day, students are exposed to presentations in the math classroom. The visual aspect, especially in a subject like math, greatly benefits the differently abled learners in my co-taught class. My classroom has only one whiteboard at the front of the room, so all 30 of my students must use this during the delivery of the lesson. My students have varied learning abilities, and the addition of a projector and screen to my classroom would allow me to work with smaller groups of students while still delivering high quality instruction and exposing them to engaging presentations, videos, and images that will help them better understand the content. Many of my students enter the classroom at least one grade-level behind. My co-teacher and are working to bridge this gap. The projector and screen would be used to show students videos, accompany math problems with images and graphics, and facilitate interactive learning. With the aid of a projector and projector screen, I will be able to work with my students in small and alternative groupings AND get to use technology to expose them to the same resources as their peers. This project will help enrich my student's experience in the math classroom and better prepare them for high school and college level math.
