My students have enjoyed completing the Spanish word searches as morning check-ins and as a word work center. The squishy stress balls have been added to our calming corner. Strong Emotional Intelligence Promotes Academic Success
Funded May 13, 2022My students are enjoying playing the Emotional Rollercoaster game and learning about strategies to cope with big emotions. It is designed like snake and ladders where students move up ladders if they have a coping skill for a strong emotion, and slide down stairs if they have strong emotion with no coping skills. They coping cards provide child friendly, useful strategies like saying positive affirmations to yourself, breathing techniques, speaking to someone about emotions.

The "A Little Spot of..." book sets have been a great addition to our classroom, and SEL. The books not only highlight what BIG emotions feel and look like, but provide kid friendly strategies to cope with these strong emotions. They have allowed my students to be mindful about their emotional state and their classmates making social conflicts easier to resolve.
The strategies have also transferred into the fairytale books through conversations about what the characters were feeling, how they managed their strong emotions and how those emotions lead them to make certain choices.

Funded Nov 17, 2019Since the arrival of our new books the students have been using them to practice their literacy skills. Students were excited to delve into the new texts which they read on their own, read with a friend or a stuff animal, as well listening to teacher read aloud. They have been summarizing texts by identifying the beginning, middle and end. Students have used the books to search for adjectives that describe and compare characters' personality traits, understand the author's purpose, identify the problem and resolution, main idea, among other many other skills.
The students have many opportunities to use these books throughout our learning day. After eating their breakfast they may go to the library and select a book to read, after recess and lunch students can relax with a book alongside a friend. During our intervention group switches, students have library time to reinforce, and or practice their literacy goals whether its comprehension, accuracy, fluency or expanding their vocabulary. Texts have also been integrated into classroom lessons.
The students in reading levels A through I have especially benefited from these new donated books. I had a few texts in these levels and the students were becoming bored of reading the same books. The also were frustrated because the books available were too difficult for them to read independently. So MANY thanks for your support in building up my students' literacy skills and fostering the love for reading.”
