  • It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Comic Books!

    Funded Feb 8, 2017

Working in a low-income has it's drawbacks, one of them being money for new materials. We are fortunate enough to get our basic needs taken care of, but when it comes to new materials, it's a challenge. Since my classroom is not in a traditional setting, my students are often forgotten about or I am left to take care of their instructional needs myself. This is where Donor's Choose and you come in. I hoped that by posting my project on Donor's Choose I would be able to get my Resource Students high interest materials reading material that would pique their educational interests, while supporting their instructional needs. The comic books that I was able to acquire from your generosity did just that! My students are beyond thrilled with their new comic books!

In the month sine since we have received the comic books, we have all had a chance to explore them all. My 5th grade students love the "cool" factor of the comics, while the kindergarten and 1st grade students like to look at the pictures to help them make better sense of the text. From my highest readers to my lowest, the comic books are able to fit their instructional needs. The pictures support comprehension while the high interest level makes the kids want to read them.

Thank you for making my students' days a little brighter, a little smarter, and a lot more fun. They feel so special to have a friend who supports them and our classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Kline-Mayeda

  • Reading, Right! Write, Right!

The materials that I was able to acquire from your generosity did just that! My students are beyond thrilled with their new materials!

As the students came in for their work session with me, I showed them the wall of new materials that had been delivered. Their eyes went big, their mouths opened, "All of this is for us?" I explained my project and that friends of our classroom had wanted to donate to their education. They couldn't believe it. "We get to use all that stuff?" they asked. "Yes! And we get to use it right now!"

In the month sine since we have received the new materials, we have had a chance to explore it all. My 5th grade students love the high-interest science comprehension kits. My kindergarten and 1st grade students adore the mini sight word books. The second grade students have liked making sentences using the stamps, and the third grade students have enjoyed using the dry-erase boards. But it is the games that have spanned the levels and have become a Friday treat for all the students. Each time we play I hear at least once, "This is so much fun, Ms. Kline."

Thank you for making my students' days a little brighter, a little smarter, and a lot more fun. They feel so special to have a friend who supports them and our classroom.”

  • Stop, Listen, Look And Think!

    Funded Dec 16, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous contributions to my classroom. Our materials arrived on a Monday and by Tuesday our Listening Center was the new favorite activity in the classroom. The students have been listening to the many books that I have on CD. Their favorites have been the chapter books like, Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Due to their limited reading ability it has been difficult for them to access books at their reading level. By using our new listening center the students have found joy in reading. They are now asking me to borrow more books on CD from the library and have even given me a list of books they would like listen to. Our next project is to record them reading and having them listen to each other on tape!

My students and I are very grateful to you for your contribution. Our classroom has been filled with more smiles since our wonderful listening center has arrived.”

  • Sharpen Your Mind

    Funded Jan 19, 2012

My class has been overjoyed to have received the art materials from our Donors at Donor's Choose. They have loved being able to use the color pencils, new crayons, paint, scissors and paper for projects in our classroom. We have used the paper to make a variety of projects, from illustrating our stories, to creating a our own "Starry Night", which I have posted pictures of them beginning their creative process.

It is so wonderful to see them excited to create art projects to go with our curriculum. I have seen them become more interested in writing because they know that they will be able to create a picture to go with the words they have written. We have used the materials during math in order to express in pictures what the math problem is asking us. The ways in which we will use these materials is endless!

As we draw closer to California state testing, my students and I have brainstormed some projects that we want to do after our testing morning. The students want to use our art materials, from Sharpen Your Mind, to create volcanoes, do a solar system project and make a California Mission. We are also going to take the opportunity to learn about artists from different movements and time periods.

Thank you again for you generous contributions. It means the world to us that their are people who care about funding projects for our inner-city classroom. Thank you from all the student's of Ms. Kline's class. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Kline-Mayeda

My students are part of the Resource Specialist Program at a Title 1 school. Not only do they have learning disabilities, but they are also English Language Learners. They are some of the most amazing students that work hard to meet the challenges that they are given to them every day. Though they have difficulty with meeting grade level standards, that doesn't stop them from trying their best and doing it with humor and grace.
