Reading in Ms. Kee's Coffee Shop!
Funded Aug 10, 2021With the materials, especially the books supplied for "Ms. Kee's Coffee Shop" my students have logged over 7000 reading hours from titles supplied on my bookshelf. The books have helped my students to further understand the standards set by our state. We were able to thoroughly analyze characters, identify the central idea and claims, as well as write objective summaries. My students really enjoyed reading titles like; The Hate U Give, The Color Purple, Forged by Fire, A Raisin in the Sun to name a few. Their discovery of these books has started to broaden their literary tastes.
Reading in my class has a differentiated approach. Students are able to sit in the reading corner on the beanbag chair. They are able to read in pairs, small groups, or independently. Afterward, we all analyze the text if we are doing a class read or they will independently do book reports or write objective summaries.
My students as a collective have enjoyed the new books, as they have been excited about new reads or doing class reports. We have even formed argumentative essays based on a unit topic pertaining to survival and paired with our class read "Forged by Fire". Some have checked out a few books to take home and read outside of class and have mentioned that they enjoyed and tried to take another book for reading. All cleaning and writing supplies benefitted my students to help them start preparing to become effective readers, writers, and thinkers.
My legacy builders at Washington have thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the contributions of the generous donors willing to help!”
