"The Hate U Give" novel would be a phenomenal addition to my English III curriculum. Not only does the narrative center around a strong and relatable female person of color, but the plot is very relevant to modern American culture. Most importantly, this book will help students explore controversial and complex topics with a modern flair that will appeal to their interests, even with references to popular culture. The classic cannon of American Literature is definitely something that should be covered in high school English, but it should not come at the cost of ignoring the political and social climate of the 21st century. Representation matters, so it is important to use texts written by differing authors that contain characters varying by gender, race, and sexual orientation so that students can benefit from the resulting diverse conversations. This book would be part of a larger scope of analysis. Along with reading the entire novel, we will examine music and news articles concerning Civil Rights activism while emphasizing on ones that connect to the Black Lives Matter movement.
