  • 3rd Grade Loves Reading StoryWorks!

    Funded Dec 24, 2021

We can't thank you enough for supporting the 3rd grade students at PS 94. Due to your generous donations, the entire grade level continues to have access to a most wonderful resource, StoryWorks Magazine. We have both paper and digital access fully funded for an entire year, thanks to you! We use this magazine to supplement our English Language Arts curriculum as well as getting students to enjoy reading by exploring the various interesting topics in the magazine. We have read many fiction stories, non-fiction, current events articles and plays from StoryWorks. Students have the opportunity to practice comprehension and writing skills by completing the various assessments, quick checks and lesson plans guided by the teachers. The articles in the magazine foster important discussions among the students in class. We are truly enjoying this resource. Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hoffman

  • Back to School Like a Boss!

    Funded Sep 29, 2021

I can't thank you enough for your generous and thoughtful donations to class 3-206 at the David D. Porter School! With all of your support, my project was able to be funded and my class was provided with some amazing supplies.

Once the class heard that due to the help of their parents, teachers and friends that we were going to receive some helpful and much needed supplies, the class cheered and clapped with joy! It felt so great to be able to share this excitement with the class. As the shipments arrived, each day we received a new box to open.

We are especially grateful that our new laptops have a safe place to be housed each day. We received a 16-slot tabletop laptop storage unit where the laptops now live, neatly. Each day they are charged and work perfectly since we can now see where each designated power cord belongs. The laptops can be locked away each evening and they are nice and neat and organized. We also a loving our storage cart with many draws for our all new school supplies, which we are using each day!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hoffman

  • Rockin' 3rd Grade Writers: Awesome Workstations = Our Best Work!

    Funded Sep 14, 2016

    Dear Mr. and Mrs. Pion,

My class and I can not thank you enough for the generous donation to Donors Choose to fund our writing project. The trays were delivered very promptly and in perfect condition. They were BETTER than what we expected! I'm happy to share with you how they have impacted my students and their work.

The students are using the trays just about all day in class. There are two 45-minute blocks of time when reading is taught, one 45-minute block of time for writing and two 45-minute blocks of time for math, every day. The trays are used during that entire time. We also use them for handwriting with our Occupational Therapist twice a week for a half hour each session, as well as during chapter tests in all of the subject areas. The trays are light and portable enough that the students can carry them to where we need to set up. This is usually in the back of the classroom, but sometimes in a different area of the room or in the hallway when we need to provide a separate location to eliminate distractions for our various leveled learners.

The students and staff alike, were so excited when they first saw us using the trays. The students were very eager to try something new and report that they are so much more comfortable doing their work. I have noticed a major change in the amount of work the students are producing as well as a tremendous improvement in the legibility of their work. Prior to receiving the trays, the students were working for hours a day with just a notebook on the floor, leaning over sitting with their legs crossed. Many of the students have fine and large motor deficiencies and sitting that was simply not working for them. The trays have made life in school so much more enjoyable for everyone! Whenever a teacher from a different class comes in to visit, they always compliment the trays and ask where they were purchased. They all think it is such a wonderful idea. The principal, other administration and the superintendent have also taken note of the trays and have complimented the children on using them so nicely as well as asking where they came from and praising YOU for getting them to us!

The trays will continue to create positive outcomes during small group instruction each day. The students understand that they must take very good care of their special supplies. The teachers have had discussions with the class that we intend on sharing these trays with the next classes of third graders coming up and that in order for other students to enjoy them, it is up to the current class to do their part. Going forward this year, we are hoping that we can offer the trays to all students to use as a reward for positive behavior. All the students enjoy them and want to have time using them, so it will assist the teachers going forward by enabling us to have something unique and useful to offer to all students.

Again, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Please know how appreciated your donation is. Be assured that the trays are being well used and have created a major positive effect on many students already, in the short time we have have them. Kudos to you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hoffman

Working in small groups is how my students learn best. The class breaks off into groups during writing, reading, math and sometimes for science and social studies. Writing is an integral part of all of these subjects and when being pulled to a small group setting, the students are left with working at the carpet on the floor. They need a sturdy surface to support their writing. Having workstations to use during small group sessions is vital for a higher quality of work. The students will be able to have better posture, neater work and a place to organize their notebooks, pencils and other writing materials when in the small group. These work trays are extra nice because they have a small drawer, as well as a lip, (meant for a laptop) that will keep their materials from sliding down the work surface.
