The first time I taught this unit, my students looked at me as if I was crazy when I said, "By the end of this unit, you will be able to draw an accurate self portrait by looking in a mirror." The first day, their "self portraits" consisted of dots for eyes, wavy lines for mouths and hair, and most did not include a nose. By the end of the project, students were running to each other explaining where they should add more value and debating who's portrait looked most real. I saw my students transtransformform during this unit, they trusted me, began to believe more in their abilities and started to enjoy art. My students are from a rural town and know more hardships than most should know by the time they hit high school. Moving here to teach I thought I would be the one enlightening their lives, but somehow the opposite happened. My students are bright, and they know how to persevere. Having the ability to offer them more resources means that they will be able to continue the fight for knowledge
